HOW TO KNOW A FROZEN CHICKEN WAS DE*AD BEFORE FREEZING AND SAVE YOUR HEALTH

• Uneven Colour: Freshly slaughtered frozen chicken remains naturally pink. If you see grey, greenish patches or dark, bruised areas, it’s a red flag.
• Dark or Blackened Joints: Check the elbows, knees and wings. Dead-before-slaughter chickens often have black, dark red or clotted joints.
• Strange Odour After Thawing: When you thaw it and a sour or offensive smell comes out immediately, it was not fresh before freezing.
• Soft and Mushy Flesh: Even while frozen, some parts may feel unusually soft or collapse when pressed. Fresh birds stay firm when frozen.
• Ice Colour: Clear ice is normal. Yellowish or bloody ice around the chicken suggests poor handling or that the bird died long before freezing.
• Excessive Blood Pooling: If you see a lot of dark blood trapped inside the pack, it means the chicken wasn’t properly bled a common sign of a bird that died on its own.
• Loose Skin and Weak Joints: If the wings or legs bend too easily after thawing, it may be a dead-on-arrival bird frozen to disguise it.
• Overall Look: Fresh frozen chicken looks neat and uniform. Dead birds look dull, uneven and unattractive even inside the nylon.

Before you buy frozen chicken, take a good look. Your safety is worth more than the price tag. Always buy from trusted cold rooms.

Why Do Some Eggs Look Like They Are Coated with Fibres or Rough Material?

From time to time, chickens may lay eggs that do not look smooth and normal. Instead, the shell may appear rough, bumpy, or as if it is covered with fibres. This happens because of the way the shell is formed inside the hen.

Some common reasons include:
• Extra calcium being deposited on the shell
• Stress or sudden disturbances while the egg is forming
• Viral infections that affect the reproductive tract
• Nutritional imbalances during shell development
• The age of the hen, as very young or older layers often produce irregular shells

These unusual eggs are not uncommon and can give us insight into what is happening with the birds. At Skan Agro Farm, we share these lessons to help more people understand poultry production and the journey of every egg.

INFECTIOUS CORYZA IN POULTRY – WHAT EVERY PULLET FARMER SHOULD KNOW

Infectious coryza is a fast-spreading bacterial disease that hits pullets hard just when they’re about to start laying. Caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum, it brings swollen faces, nasal discharge, watery eyes, sneezing, and reduced feed intake. In laying birds, it leads to serious egg drop.

The Environment Matters

Poor ventilation, overcrowding, wet litter, and damp weather all make it easier for the disease to spread. Coryza thrives in dirty, poorly managed poultry houses.

Managing Coryza
• Isolate sick birds quickly
• Use antibiotics (like oxytetracycline or sulfa drugs)
• Vaccinate where the disease is common
• Improve housing and hygiene
• Enforce strong biosecurity

Research Update

Scientists have developed better vaccines by identifying different strains. In Nigeria, NVRI is working on resistance studies to help farmers pick effective treatments.

Don’t joke with coryza. Protect your pullets, protect your profits.

Join the fight against hunger in any capacity you can. Growing food should not be seasonal as hunger does not have season.
