Common Causes of Rainy Season Fires

💣Electrical faults – Rainwater seeps into damaged wiring, sockets, or electrical panels, causing short circuits and electrical fires.

💣Power surges – Frequent outages and sudden power restoration can overload appliances and ignite fires.

💣Unsafe use of candles and lanterns – During blackouts, unattended flames can easily set homes on fire.

💣Improper generator use – Using generators indoors or refueling them while they are still hot can lead to fires and explosions.

💣Kitchen negligence – Cooking while distracted or leaving food unattended remains a major cause of home fires, regardless of the weather.

💣Gas leaks – Moisture can accelerate corrosion of gas fittings and hoses, increasing the risk of leaks and ignition.

*International Firefighters' Day – May 4*

International Firefighters' Day is observed every year on May 4. It’s a day set aside globally to honor the service, courage, and sacrifice of firefighters everywhere.

*Key facts about the day:*
Aspect Details
**Origin** Established after a tragic wildfire in Linton, Australia on Dec 2, 1998 that killed 5 firefighters. Proposed by firefighter JJ Edmondson in 1999. First observed May 4, 1999.
**Why May 4?** It’s the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. St. Florian was a Roman officer who organized firefighting brigades and is said to have saved a village from fire.
**Main purposes** 1. Remember firefighters who died in the line of duty 2. Thank current and past firefighters for their service 3. Show support for the firefighting community
**Symbols** **Red & blue ribbon**: Red for fire, blue for water/emergency services. **Sound Off**: At noon local time, fire sirens sound for 30 seconds followed by a minute of silence.
**How people observe it** Wear blue and red ribbons, light up homes/landmarks in red & blue, visit local fire stations to say thank you, observe a moment of silence at noon, share messages of gratitude.

EID EL-FITR MESSAGE FROM THE ZONAL FIRE SERVICE POTISKUM COMMAND

On behalf of the Fire Service Potiskum Command, the Potiskum Zonal extends warm felicitations to the good people of Potiskum and Yobe State at large on the joyous occasion of Eid El-Fitr.

As we celebrate the successful completion of Ramadan, a period marked by sacrifice, devotion, and self-discipline, we pray that the blessings of this sacred season bring peace, prosperity, and unity to our dear potiskum, state and the nation as a whole.

While we rejoice during this Sallah celebration, we kindly urge all citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks.
