The Truth About Fertilized Turkey Eggs Most Farmers Don’t Know

Why are you selling fertilized turkey eggs instead of allowing your turkey to hatch them?"

My two local turkey hens are already sitting on eggs and have been incubating for almost 14 days. At this stage, it is already too late to add fresh eggs because the newly laid eggs will not develop at the same pace as the eggs already under incubation.

This is actually the method I have always used on my farm.

Whenever my turkey starts laying, I usually sell the first set of eggs. This prevents the eggs from staying too long before incubation begins. After that, I keep the later eggs she lays. By the time she completes laying, I can gather enough fresh eggs of similar age and place them under her for better hatchability.

Many people do not know that the age of a fertilized egg matters.

A fertilized turkey egg is simply an egg produced after successful mating between a tom (male turkey) and a hen (female turkey). If properly stored and incubated, it can develop into a healthy turkey poult.

For the best hatch results, most farmers and hatcheries prefer fresh fertilized eggs. Eggs that have been stored for too long usually experience lower hatchability rates. This is why proper timing, storage, and handling are very important.

Interestingly, fertilized eggs are not only used for hatching.

Some people buy them to increase their flock and start turkey production.

Some hatcheries use them for artificial incubation.

Others even consume fertilized eggs as food because there is practically no visible difference between a fresh fertilized egg and an unfertilized egg unless incubation has already started.

The truth is that fertilized eggs are valuable because they give you the opportunity to produce more birds without buying poults at a higher price.
