BUILDING FERTILE SOIL THE NATURAL WAY USING HUGELKULTUR RAISED BEDS.
This planting method is known as "Hugelkultur" a sustainable raised-bed system that turns wood waste into long-term soil fertility.
HOW IT’S DONE:
1. Logs are placed at the base to act as a sponge, storing moisture.
2. Branches are layered on top to improve aeration and slow decomposition.
3. Leaves and straw follow, adding organic matter.
4. Topsoil caps the bed, creating a rich growing surface.
Over time, the wood breaks down, releasing nutrients while retaining moisture reducing irrigation needs and improving soil structure.
Why this system works:
• Excellent water retention
• Gradual nutrient release
• Improved soil life and microbial activity
• Ideal for vegetables like cucumber, pumpkin, zucchini, melon, and pepper
The result?
Healthy vines, consistent fruiting, and higher yields with minimal external inputs as seen in the harvest above.
