You bought fresh tomatoes on Saturday... so why does it already smell by Wednesday? 🤔
The answer might surprise you, and it's probably happening in your own kitchen
Most people don’t realise that different foodstuffs need to be stored differently.
There are two types of food items in your kitchen.
The ones that can wait, rice, garri, palm oil, beans, spaghetti.
These are non-perishable. Store them in an airtight container. Keep them away from moisture and air. They’ll last a long time when stored properly.
The ones that can’t wait like stockfish, fresh tomatoes, peppers, onions, crayfish.
These are perishable. And this is where most people go wrong.
Putting fresh tomatoes in a sealed container for days? That’s exactly what makes them go bad faster. Perishable items need air to breathe.
Here’s what to do instead:
For stockfish and crayfish: dry them properly under the sun first. Then tie them loosely in a clean dry bag. They’ll last much longer.
For fresh tomatoes and peppers, blend them and store in the freezer. They stay fresh for weeks and are ready to use anytime.
For all foodstuffs: store neatly in a cool dry place. Insects are attracted to mess. Neatness protects your food.
