🐟 FISH FEEDING: FEEDING YOUR FISH THE RIGHT WAY
Proper feeding is one of the most important factors affecting fish growth, feed conversion, water quality and profitability. Feeding should not simply be about giving fish more feed; it should be about giving them the right feed, in the right quantity, at the right time and in the right way.
🔹 1. Feed According to Feeding Rates
Fish should be fed based on scientifically established feeding rates. Factors such as fish size, age, biomass, water temperature and production stage should be considered. Overfeeding does not necessarily mean faster growth—it can increase feed costs and deteriorate water quality.
🔹 2. Control the Quantity and Feed Size
Feed should be offered in controlled portions that the fish can consume within a reasonable period. Excess feed becomes waste, affecting water quality and increasing production costs.
Also, ensure the pellet size matches the mouth size and developmental stage of the fish. Too-large pellets can be difficult to consume, while very small pellets may lead to unnecessary feed wastage.
🔹 3. Choose Feed Based on Nutritional Requirements
Before selecting a feed, check its nutritional composition. A good fish feed should provide the appropriate balance of protein, energy, fats, vitamins and minerals required for the particular stage of production.
🔹 4. Give Fry Extra Attention 🐟
Fry are particularly delicate and require careful feeding and management. They should be kept in suitable nursery systems where their feeding response, growth and water quality can be closely monitored. Small changes in water quality can have a significant effect on their survival and growth.
🔹 5. Avoid Unnecessary Feeding During Stress
When fish are experiencing significant stress—such as poor water quality, handling, transportation or sudden environmental changes—feeding may need to be reduced temporarily depending on the situation. The aim is to reduce additional stress and prevent uneaten feed from further affecting water quality. Feeding should resume gradually once the fish recover.
💡 KEY MESSAGE:
Good feeding is not about feeding more; it is about feeding accurately and efficiently.
👉 Right feed + Right quantity + Right pellet size + Right timing = Better growth and better returns.
