Meet the W**e maker: Diogo Campilho, Aveleda
It’s always a pleasure to welcome w**emakers to Oslo W**e School. These encounters give us the opportunity to ask questions, deepen our understanding, and explore the decisions behind the w**es we taste.
For our latest Meet the W**emaker evening, we welcomed Diogo Campilho, chief w**emaker at Aveleda in Portugal, to explore Alvarinho from Vinho Verde, alongside white and red w**es from the Douro.
How does Alvarinho express itself when grown on schist compared with granite? Tasting the w**es side by side with Diogo offered a fascinating opportunity to explore the influence of soil and discuss his experiences in the vineyard.
We also tasted two w**es from the Douro. In a region known for its warm climate, the freshness of the white Vale D. Maria Vinha de Martim 2023 stood out. At 13% ABV, it prompted a discussion about how vineyard conditions and picking decisions contribute to balance. Diogo explained that the w**e comes from an approximately 80-year-old vineyard planted with a mix of grape varieties. He described how these established vines, with their deep roots, produce ripe, balanced grapes, and how carefully judged harvest timing helps preserve freshness.
The evening’s red w**e, Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinhas Velhas 2022, also came from old vines—more than 60 years old. In our tasting, it showed elegance and finesse, with velvety tannins.
What did we take away from the evening? A deeper appreciation of the many thoughtful decisions made in the vineyard and w**ery, and the value of discussing them directly with the person who makes the w**es.
With just 14 guests, the conversation felt personal and welcoming, almost as though we had invited Diogo into our own home. His warmth and willingness to share his knowledge encouraged questions and brought the everyday work of a w**emaker to life.
This is what we value at Oslo W**e School: bringing people together to explore w**e through shared curiosity, informed discussion, and our own professional assessments.
