I feel like we might be late to the party with this one, as I’ve been hearing about Terra Viva’s cafe for years, but we’re really pleased we finally tried it.

Sooooo impressed with the menu, not only did it offer all the usual favourites, but it also offered some more unusual offerings and it was hard to choose. In the end, we sprang for the famous-in-Christchurch Chicken Liver Patê, and the French Dip Croque.

The patê was just awesome, served with various toasted breads, salad, and gherkins, it was delicious- we both loved it and I was quite tempted to buy a jar to take home. The croque was a fancy cheese toasty, stuffed full with beef brisket and served with a little pot of hot French dip sauce which tasted like French onion soup. It was awesome!
There was so much else on the menu we wanted to try, and every plate we saw coming out of the kitchen looked so good!
Service was lovely, and we enjoyed poking around in their shop after lunch too. Highly recommended!

Today was Hello Sunday, on a wintry Thursday!
This place is lovely, it’s bigger than it seems with lots of little spaces throughout the building. The staff were really lovely, very attentive and helpful.
Mum resisted the smashed avo, although it was hard as the description looked fantastic, but she opted for the fried chicken. It was fantastic- I tried it too, served with sauce and spicy jalapeño! I had the bagel, served with a generous amount of yummy pesto, cream cheese and greens.
This place is lovely, we chose it today as we thought the parking would be easier than town and it was. We’d definitely come back here!
Oh, and it’s dog friendly - we don’t know so hadn’t taken ours but we will next time!

Majestic Tea House in Prebbleton! This was such a lovely spot! The cabinet food looked great but we both ordered off the menu (as usual!) Mum had her usual - Avo smash - and declared this one to be an excellent example, with plenty of greens, lovely crumbly feta, little pickled veges and on lovely bread, Mum cleaned her plate which does not always happen!
I had a Thai beef salad, I don’t usually go for salad but this was great, plenty of beef and a lovely dressing really made it shine.
Majestic has a gorgeous cabinet of chocolates and other sweets that look particularly special, I ended with a macaron- I’m quite fussy about these as when they’re good they’re amazing but when they’re bad the disappointment is rough! I’m delighted to say this one was absolutely perfect. Mum had a chocolate brownie that was divine too - another clean plate!
The staff were lovely, cafe light and airy, plenty of parking. This one is a definite winner!

Oh noooooooo! I suppose it had to happen eventually. We always said our reviews would only be positive, and for the first time we’re not going to review the cafe where we had lunch today.
This is a place that is under new management so to be fair, perhaps they’re still getting their ducks in a row, so perhaps we’ll go back in a few months and they’ll be doing great, but in the meantime we’ve quietly and as kindly as possible given them some feedback and will leave it at that 😊🤞

Absolute bargain! If you’re looking for a hearty, tasty, great value lunch then this is the place! The Beasley has a $15 lunch deal, and for that price we were expecting much more modest portions, but my steak and chips, and Mum’s roast pork were too big to finish.
The chips were excellent, steak perfectly cooked, pork juicy and soft with crunchy crackling. This could not have been better!
Highly recommend The Bealey - it would be an awesome choice for lunch on a cold day this coming winter. Book though - we got in but it was pretty busy!

This place! Just looking at the cabinet is food p**n! I’ve been wanting to lunch at Le Bakerman in Fendalton for a while now, and today was the day. It was very busy - because it’s amazing - but lots of staff on and all very efficient so we didn’t have to wait long.
Mum had a steak and pepper pie - very uncharacteristically of her! It looked and tasted gorgeous. She followed this up with a chocolate eclair! Mum doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, but adores cream, and as she says a chocolate eclair is a fabulous vehicle for all that cream! It was fab.
I had a chicken croquette - yummy and crispy on the outside and tasty chicken in the middle, followed up by a pretty little desert cup with berries, sponge, and cream, really lovely!
This place is so special for their cakes and treats, definitely put it on your list if you haven’t tried it yet!
(Note, mum had just been at the dentist and refused to be photographed today - fair enough!)

Time is flying by and Mum has reminded me I haven’t yet posted last weeks lunch!
Last week he headed to Robert Harris at South City Mall. This little mall fascinates me, it seems to have lived many lives and although in the past it’s sometimes looked a bit empty, it has really come alive again in recent years and its definitely worth a look!
For lunch we headed to Robert Harris, there’s a few of these around the city and while they all seem to hold a pretty high standard the selection of foods does vary.

Mum chose the avo on toast, and I chose the filo parcel (seems like we often choose similar things wherever we go so it’s a great chance to compare!)
We both really enjoyed our meals, the avo was generous and beautifully accentuated with feta and greens. My filo was yum - beautifully crunchy and lovely creamy filling! Delicious!

This week we tried The Edge cafe in Edgeware! Lovely place and very spacious with a big outside area.
We absolutely could not resist both ordering the mince on toast, which is definitely making a strong comeback as a cafe classic!
Big portion, tasty mince, lovely bread, 10/10!
The coffee was perfect too, and really lovely staff.
Another great one out in the suburbs ☺️🎉

The stunning Sign of the Kiwi Café today, and the weather made for a fabulous view! I must have driven past this café hundreds of times and have never stopped, so it was a great day to finally try it.
Absolutely beautiful building, and steeped in the early settler history of the area.
Mum declared her smashed avo toast the best she’s ever had and nearly licked the plate clean 🤣 I had the mushroom filo that was gorgeously crunchy on the outside and rich and creamy on the inside - perfect!
But, apparently their date scone is their pride and joy so it wouldn’t be a complete review without trying one. It was HUGE, and packed full of dates, and served with piles of real butter. We can certainly see why it’s so popular and why we saw dozens of them walking out the door on plates or in bags while we were there!
Definitely worth the drive!

Annnnnnddd we’re back! We apologise for missing last week, particularly to Leigh who by all accounts did miss us! We aim to always be more reliable than a Seymour school lunch at least 🤣
Absolutely brilliant lunch today at Little Pom’s. We loved everything about this place, the decor is stunning, and the wait staff are a bit more elegant and formal than you might expect at a cafe, making it all feel more indulgent.
Mum had the salmon, which looked like a work of art on the plate with sourdough, poached eggs, avocado, and some pickled white beetroot which did take both of us a few tastes and reflection to recognise it was in fact white beetroot.
I had the brisket, which was presented as a sandwich with fries but the gorgeous mix of Asian flavours with the brisket made it a real stand out dish.
A bit more pricy than a regular cafe lunch but everything was wonderful and I definitely feel like I’ve been Out For Lunch 😊
10/10

Mona Vale this week! Absolutely stunning old building beautifully maintained, and it always amazes me that the grounds are open to the public and free for anyone to wander through - even with dogs!
It was a stunning day but being committed shade dwellers we chose to sit inside the impressive dining room.
We chose to share the lunch platter for two, and although it looked a bit small it was too much for us - looks were deceiving - it was plenty!
Highlights were the marmite infused butter, which was completely delicious, the gorgeous cheeses - one was somewhat scorched for a gorgeous smoky flavour, and the other tasted of truffles, there were pickles, nuts, dips and yummy chicken croquettes too.
Fabulous service too!

An absolute gem this week! I can’t believe I’ve never been to this one before: Lemon Tree on St Asaph Street.
The decor is gorgeous, you’ll feel like you’re visiting some china-collecting great aunt with such lovely displays of china-cabinet-worthy old world kitchen bits just everywhere.
Mum ordered the Avo Smash, which was as good as we’ve had anywhere - very generous pile of perfectly seasoned avo piled high on sourdough.
I had the mince on toast, which was sensational- I absolutely loved it! Not often seen on cafe menus but this was soooo delicious - highly recommended!
Service was fabulous too, there’s everything to recommend about this place! It would be ideal for a large group high tea too, lots of space!
We’ll definitely go back! And yes, it’s on First Table 🎉
