Freshly retired from racing, you might expect an OTTB to be full of fizz and opinions. Archie missed that memo entirely. He’s an old soul in a young horse’s body, with the kind of temperament that makes you smile every time you’re around him. The "woah" button is well and truly installed, and his favourite speed is somewhere between strolling and standing still.
Archie is the definition of easy going. Calm, kind and uncomplicated, he takes life exactly as it comes. Whether it's loading onto the float, standing for the farrier, heading out on an adventure, or simply soaking up attention, he approaches everything with the same relaxed attitude. He recently had a full new set of shoes and was an absolute gentleman throughout. He loads and unloads from a straight load float like a dream and has proven himself to be wonderfully sensible in new environments.
We recently took him on a cross country outing and while most horses would be busy looking around, Archie was quite content to find a nice spot and become an armchair while you enjoyed the sunshine. That's really who he is at heart a horse that just enjoys being with his person.
His biggest joy is cruising around on a long rein. In fact, if you're feeling brave, he'll happily wander along with no hands while you enjoy the ride. We've played Pony Club games on him, including around the world and other antics, and he stood like a statue, soaking up the fuss and attention as if he'd done it his whole life.
Archie does enjoy his jumping and shows plenty of willingness, but his education is still very much a work in progress. Like many fresh off the track horses, he currently carries himself with a rather unorthodox head carriage (we affectionately refer to it as his llama phase!). However, his schooling is coming along and he’s willing. He's learning to understand contact, soften through his body and become more supple every ride. He tries hard, wants to please, and continues to improve as he gains confidence and understanding.
We truly believe Archie will thrive in a happy hacking home with someone who appreciates a kind nature over flashy movement. He's the sort of horse who will meet you at the gate, look after your confidence, and become a genuine partner. The right person won't just be buying a horse, they'll be gaining a best friend.
Archie is looking for someone to adore him as much as we do.
