In 1949, a group of local miners and hardworking men put pen to paper and created something far greater than a building, they created a legacy.

This image bears the signatures of the founding members whose vision, determination and community spirit gave birth to what we proudly know today as The Blue Rooms.

For nearly many years, this place has echoed with laughter, celebrations, sport, music, fundraising, reunions, and countless community milestones. Generations have walked through these doors, forming friendships and making memories.

๐Ÿ’ฅ BLAST FROM THE PAST
Who remembers the old Carbo Plant at Rotowaro? Once a major part of our local coal-mining landscape, the Rotowaro Carbonisation Plant was built in the late 1930s, believed to be the first plant of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

The plant was built to make use of lower-quality coal from the nearby Rotowaro mines that otherwise couldn't be used. Through the carbonisation process, the coal was turned into coke and char, with by-products including tar and creosote.

For generations many local families, the Carbo Plant was simply part of the landscape, a huge industrial complex connected to the mines, the railway and the communities that grew around them.

Eventually closing on 7 August 1987 (according to Heritage NZ, conflicting dates due to fire, cease of carbonettes) with but its enormous rusting structures remained standing for many years later, a reminder of Rotowaro's industrial past.

Membership fees can be paid โ€˜over the barโ€™ or via internet banking.

Current members have a two-month renewal window to retain current membership number. And YES, you can just renew your membership over the bar (as usual)!

After 31 October, unrenewed numbers may be reissued to new members! Please allow up to 14 days for your membership and payment to be processed and your new card prepared โ€“ pickup from the bar.
