Our little mining community certainly had plenty of sporting talent! Here’s a cool snapshot of Glen Afton making the sporting pages in local and regional newspapers, with some of these articles dating back around 100 years!

⚽ Soccer 🎾 Tennis 🥊 Boxing 🏉 Football

These old clippings show just how active and competitive Glen Afton was. Our local players and teams weren’t only competing against neighbouring mining settlements, they were selected for representative teams, travelling to compete elsewhere, and having their names and achievements recorded in the newspapers.

One article from the 1930s names six Glen Afton players in the South Auckland senior soccer side, while another reports on a professional boxing tournament held right here in Glen Afton, alongside six amateur bouts.

These clippings are another little reminder that sport has been bringing our communities together for generations.

Unfortunately due to ongoing rising costs, selected items will increase from 50c on Monday, 2 November 2026.

Don’t forget, we’re still cheaper than alot of other places! So you can still enjoy a good drink without breaking the bank!

📌 New prices take effect Monday, 2 November 2026. Our updated price list will be on display at the club.

🕰️ BLAST FROM THE PAST | OUR SPORTING DAYS - PART ONE
Our little mining communities certainly knew how to get amongst it!

From the early 1940s, sport and recreation were a huge part of our community life…we had: Women’s basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Cycling, Rugby, Rugby League, Girl Guides and plenty more!

From the youngsters through to the adults, there was no shortage of talent. Judging by some of these old photos, a pretty competitive streak too!

These weren’t just teams and clubs. They were neighbours, workmates, school friends, brothers, sisters, mums, dads and whole families getting involved. Sport brought everyone together, whether you were competing, coaching, helping out or cheering from the sidelines.

How cool are these aerial shots of Rotowaro during the 1950s! 👀 taken from high above, they capture a little piece of our local history. A mining town growing and changing, with homes, roads and the surrounding landscape taking shape around the coal industry that brought so many families to the area.

For those who lived in Roto, or had whānau there, have a good look…
