✨A TASTE OF OUR MĀTARIKI MENU ✨
🍲 Nanny Shirley’s Beef Stroganoff 🍲
Every dish carries a pūrākau a story of aroha, manaakitanga, and the unwavering love and mahi of wāhine toa.
Nanny Shirley’s Beef Stroganoff reminds us of the dedication, strength, and love she poured into her whānau every single day.
After long hours of mahi, Nan would return home and continue caring for her whānau. Through her mahi nui and the love she carried as a wife, she would prepare Koro’s dinner, making sure his kai was ready for him when he arrived home from mahi at 10pm.
While she waited for his return, Nan would sit at the tēpu inside our homestead in Pakipaki, her book in hand, her foot tapping away to the sound of her favourite country music filling the whare. Those quiet moments were part of her a time of peace, comfort, and joy before she would rise again to finish preparing the kai she had lovingly made.
She would allow herself a small rest, then wake to turn the pot back on, letting the beef slowly cook and the flavours come together, filling the whare with warmth and aroha before Koro walked through the door.
That was Nan’s way of showing aroha.
Through her hands, her time, her patience, and her devotion, she created a whare filled with whānau, warmth, and belonging.
This dish honours the unseen hours, the sacrifices, and the love that was poured into her whānau. It reminds us of the strength of our kuia the women who carried so much, often quietly, but always with mana, grace, and love.
As part of our NANS HOUSE Matariki Menu, we celebrate the kai, the memories, and the mātauranga passed down through generations.
