Albariño Brothers Unfiltered #3

We’ve been talking a lot about Albariño lately… so we thought we’d keep it simple.
We wrote down what “Albarino is” to each of us:

Ollie: a great reward after a days surfing
Ant: ….the taste of summer, perfectly captured in a bottle.
Shaye: Drink Albarino when you want to remember your summer beach holidays.

Now we want to hear your answers!
Albariño is............

Albariño was made for moments like this.
Fresh seafood.
Long lunches.
Sunshine and salty air.

The bright fruit and lipsmacking salinity make it one of the most food-friendly wines around.

Oysters might be the classic pairing…
but we’re just as happy with fish and chips by the beach.

A few years ago, Albariño in New Zealand was an experiment.
Gisborne was the first region to plant Albariño, and is leading the conversation today.

With two wines in the national Top 5 with Cuisine Magazine and the region leading representation, something exciting is happening here.

Sunshine, sea breezes and a grape that feels completely at home.

This is just the beginning.

Albariño Brothers — Unfiltered.
Three mates. One grape.

If we had to describe Albariño in few words?

Taste of summer.
A little flirty.
Our new crush.
Fun, fresh & fabulous.
And occasionally… the naughty neighbour.

Now your turn —
how would you describe Albariño in three words?

What makes Albariño so damn tasty?

It’s the salinity.

That bright, coastal freshness that makes your mouth water and immediately want another sip.

Wine writer and judge Mary-Thérèse Blair describes it perfectly as “lipsmacking energy.”

And in Gisborne, with its sunshine, sea breezes and maritime influence, that character really shines.

Fresh. Vibrant. Seriously drinkable.

Have you experienced the salinity of Albariño yet? 🎏

Everyone knows Sauvignon Blanc. But Albariño plays a slightly different game.

• Think stonefruit and citrus, with a little coastal salinity that keeps you coming back for another sip.

• All the freshness, without the grassiness.

• Bright, vibrant, and incredibly drinkable.

• Some might say it’s more of a kiss on the lips than a punch in the face.

• Or, if you prefer… Sauvignon’s more attractive, slightly more interesting friend.

Have you tried Albariño yet?

The Albariño Brothers (unfiltered).

Who started the obsession? Ollie.
In a previous life he became convinced that Gisborne and Hawke's Bay were perfect for Albariño… then proceeded to politely (and persistently) convince growers to plant it.
You could say the rest of us got dragged into the obsession.

Who drinks it with oysters? Shaye.
Oysters are the classic pairing (and for good reason)… but don’t overlook the humble Kiwi combo of Albariño and fish & chips.
Highbrow meets beachside takeaway.

Who packs a suitcase full of wine to travel? Ant.
He’s the one most likely to arrive somewhere with a suitcase that mysteriously clinks when it rolls.
All in the name of spreading the Albariño word.

Three mates.
One grape.
And a strong Albariño obsession.

Why is Gisborne producing award-winning Albariño?

It mirrors the coastal conditions of Galicia in Spain — where the grape originates.

• Long sunshine hours.
• Cooling sea breezes.
• Natural salinity.

It’s no accident that two of New Zealand’s Top 5 Albariños come from here.

When place and grape align, good things happen.

Gisborne is quietly becoming the home of Albariño in New Zealand.

In the recent Top 5 Cuisine Magazine rankings:
• Most represented region - Gisborne
• Only winery with two wines featured - Albariño Brothers
• Standing alongside Rías Baixas, Spain - the spiritual home of the grape

For a variety still finding its place in Aotearoa, that feels significant. Maritime climate. Long sunshine hours. Coastal energy. Albariño hasn’t just arrived here, it feels at home.
