When organisations representing organic and conventional agriculture speak with one voice, it's worth paying attention.
Ahead of next week's votes at ENVI Committee and EP Plenary on the NGT proposal, Germany's BÖLW and DBV have issued a joint appeal calling for effective safeguards against patents on plants, seeds and genetic traits.
While they do not share the same views on NGTs, they agree on one fundamental point: innovation must not come at the expense of farmers, breeders and fair competition.
Their message is clear:
🌱 Protect access to genetic resources for breeding
🌱 Prevent market concentration and unnecessary dependencies
🌱 Reduce legal and liability risks for farmers
🌱 Ensure that patents do not become barriers to innovation
In particular, they call on MEPs to support Amendment 36, alongside other amendments that effectively limit patentability and the scope of patent protection.
This is a matter of European sovereignty and food security. It was also the position adopted by the European Parliament in its first reading, but it is not reflected in the trilogue agreement on NGTs reached in December 2025, on which MEPs will vote next week.
The fact that organic and conventional organisations have come together on this issue sends a powerful signal: protecting farmers and breeders from harmful patent effects is in the interest of European agriculture as a whole.

IFOAM Organics Europe urges all MEPs, whatever their political group, to support the amendments that effectively protect farmers and breeders and to amend the NGT agreement to limit the scope of patents and protect European sovereignty.
