Oxford A and P Assn

Oxford A and P Assn The first Show of the Association was held in 1906, with the President being a Mr J O'Halloran.

The main objectives of the Oxford A&P Association are to bring Town and Country together for one day a year to enjoy the country hospitality and to promote agricultural and pastoral excellence in all areas. Where possible, Shows are continued to be held yearly , with Royal Event status being awarded to our Shows in 2005 , 2015 and 2018. The Association is fortunate to own their own grounds, which

are used extensively by the community for other events. Some of the users being the neighbouring Oxford Area School, Rugby, Cricket, Soccer and Pony Clubs and the local Scouts and Fire Brigade to name a few. The numerous buildings on the grounds have proven great assets to the association. These include a large General Purpose Hall owned by the community to house the produce, craft, and flower sections on Show Day, A&P/Rugby building, a 4 stand Shearing Shed, a storage shed which becomes the Highland Dancing display area on Show Day as well as other smaller buildings that are utilised throughout the year along with deer and cattle yards. The main arena is sited in the middle of the ground and at one end an 'all weather' smaller arena. We have a strong Membership, and we are thankful for their continued support. Along with the numerous Sponsors that support us each year with prize money, products and vouchers, without them we would not be able to run our successful shows. The Association is affiliated with the Royal Agricultural Society. This Society which was established in 1924, is one of the few organisations in New Zealand with a 'Royal" charter, and acts as an umbrella organisation for the 98 A&P Associations and over 60 breed societies throughout New Zealand

Dairy Goat Junior Judging A Success in Cross-Section Collaboration

This year, the Dairy Goat section introduced an exciting change by opening the Junior Judging class to participants from the Dairy and Beef Cattle sections. The initiative proved to be an outstanding success, fostering camaraderie and skill-sharing across different agricultural disciplines.

The Competition
The class invited young agriculturalists aged 24 and under to demonstrate their technical knowledge. Competitors were evaluated on their precision in placing the animals and their confidence in speaking to those placings—a true test of both livestock eye and public speaking.

Highlighting New Talent
The event saw a fantastic turnout, notably from the Rangiora High School Lowline Cattle team, who brought eight competitors to the ring. Remarkably, seven of those eight were competing in Dairy Goat judging for the very first time.

Section Convener Alice praised the effort of the newcomers:
"It was wonderful to see so many young people stepping outside their comfort zones. For so many first-timers to perform at this level is a testament to their dedication and livestock knowledge."

Official Results
A huge congratulations to the following individuals for their top-tier evaluations:

1st Place: Harry Parrish (Rangiora High School Lowline Cattle team)

2nd Place: Niamh Carden-Holdstock (Tamarvale Dairy Goats)

3rd Place: Samara Van Wyk (Rangiora High School Lowline Cattle team)

4th Place: Annabelle Birchler (Rangiora High School Lowline Cattle team)

Congratulations to all the competitors who participated and helped make this cross-section initiative a highlight of the year! And Thanks to the exhibitors who help run this.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Following the success of this year’s cross-section initiative, we are looking for a dedicated sponsor to support the Dairy Goat Junior Judging class for the 2027 show. This is a unique opportunity to support youth development and agricultural education in our community. If you or your business would like to provide prizes or support for these talented young judges or another section, please send us a message .

Champion of Champions

Our Annual Show held last weekend once again showcased some of the finest livestock, equestrian talent and rural exhibits in the region. A highlight of our show is the presentation of the prestigious 'Champion Animal of the Show', recognizing excellence in breeding, presentation and performance across all categories.
This year the Champion Animal of the Show was awarded to a 4 year old Red & White Holstein Friesian Dairy Cow owned by Robbie, Emily, John & Sue Wakelin of Belbrook Holsteins in Springbank. Belbrook Stoplight Esther-Red had earlier in the day won the Robson Environment Champion All Breeds Dairy Cow, Holstein Friesian Champion Cow, the Type and Production Class having produced 690kgs of milksoilds in her 2024/25 lactation and also taking out the best uddered Dairy Cow.
It has been quite some season for Esther having won All Breeds Champion Cow at Ellesmere, Rangiora and Christchurch Shows back in the spring to complete an unbeaten show season.
When asked what makes Esther such a special cow Robbie said “she is the type of dairy cow the industry is wanting; she is a non fussy cow of moderate stature with alot of capacity, a good rump and a well attached desirable udder that knows how to milk. What holds special significance to us is Esther is the 8th desendant of a cow my father purchased back in 1973.”

Congratulations
