WHAT ARE YOU BREEDING FOR?
At Paki-Iti, our programme is built around three things: structure, constitution and performance.
For more than 100 years, Romneys have been bred at Paki-Iti on hard hill country at Rangiwahia, using the country itself as a breeding and testing ground.
Today, our programme spans Romney, Romtex, Romshire, Suffolk and Suftex genetics, with each developed for a specific purpose within a commercial sheep operation.
ROMNEY: our maternal foundation. A moderate framed, deep bodied type of sheep, bred for fertility, growth, survival, worm resistance and longevity.
ROMTEX: maternal plus growth, combining fertility and structure with faster growth and higher meat yield.
ROMSHIRE: our shedding maternal, a stabilised breeding programme using Paki-Iti Romney as the base, and selected to retain those maternal strengths while adding shedding.
SUFFOLK & SUFTEX: terminal genetics focused on growth, meat yield and survival, while maintaining the structure and longevity needed for hill country.
The breeding programme also uses DNA testing to improve the accuracy and reliability of genetic selection.
The philosophy is simple: if the sheep can perform on our hill country at 637m, then they can thrive anywhere.
Over the following weeks we will showcase more detailed into regarding our various breeds on offer, so give us a follow to learn more.
