Just arrived back from the Aotearoa Growers Hui. Apparently, it’s their 2nd annual get together and it was an incredible experience. It was held at Toi Omahai Institute of Technology in Rotorua. More specifically, at the marae, on the campus. It was a 2-night/3 day event in which we were welcomed in by a powhiri (formal Māori welcoming) and hongi (pressing of nose and forehead together as well as sharing a breath). We were then explained some of the history of this particular marae and its components. Overall, it really set a very hospitable vibe for our stay on the campus—holding some manaakitanga true!

So much information was relayed during the sessions and a lot was packed into our time. Food was catered by Kaitahi Catering and was NEXT level (see the pics). My coffee addiction was well met by the provision of some local roasters as well. To sum it up… after a very full year of planting, harvesting, grazing, building, and marketing… I felt spoiled 😆

Met so many wonderful folks on differing journeys from hydroponics, home gardeners, community growers, market gardeners, biodynamic growers, large scale farmers… and, it turns out, we can all relate in our joy (and struggles) to develop and cultivate the art of working alongside nature.

Many thanks to the organizers of this hui and I’m excited to see how this movement of developing more robust local nutrient dense food production systems eventuates.

In our times of AI Slop filling the internet I realize this may be a bit of stretch for some to believe. Jessica Edelbaum went out to garden yesterday and harvested this capsicum and opened it up to this surprise! Sometimes reality has a way to let you know you're on the right path. Happy food, happy bellies, happy beings...
