Groves & Filly The complex summation of factors that go into making wine unique. Why do we borrow a word from the French and use it in the context of what we do in wine?

Well, there simply isn’t a word we know in English that encapsulates the complex summation of factors that go into making wine and at the same time expresses the uniqueness between one place and another. Why does a wine from this year to that year differ, why does a wine from vineyard neighbours differ, why do wines from here exhibit a greater depth to that wine from just over there. Terroir, the wrap it up answer

During Vintage 2024, Milly made a bold claim: the Gamay was to be her Gamay.

So we rolled with it.

She picked the fruit, helped process it, did the crushing and pump-overs, measured sugars through ferment, pressed it, put it to barrel, and bottled it too (with a little help along the way).

From vine to bottle, this wine carries her hands, her spirit, and the energy of a very special vintage.

It only feels right to call it Milly’s Gamay. 🍇 Limited to 160 bottles 🥰

Throw back to this day 2018 🥰

Flashback: Over ten years ago we had raised sheep (orphan lambs) to graze our vineyards. Turns out they actually wanted to be close to our house (and us) so were a bit useless! They all grew old and died. Again, we have horses now for "grazing".

Also to note the once was normal drought conditions, which we haven't seen much over the past decade in Martinborough. And, Simon dressed in black? Must have just come back from his other job.

Before horses roamed these paddocks, there were sheep, and two old dogs who came from the city to Martinborough. They adapted with ease, becoming not sheep dogs, but the sheep’s dogs.
