Here’s a snap of our ram lambs that came in for a sort as part of our resilience programme.
This mob is 1200 strong, and none of these lambs have ever been drenched.

They’ve been run as a single mob and rotated across hill country, so they’ve had to perform under real farming conditions from day one.

Over the next week, we’ll bring the resilience testing phase to a close as part of this, each ram will be weighed for live weight at 8 months of age (LW8) and assessed with a dag score.

This is where performance is exposed and we begin to identify the rams that combine growth, resilience, and the ability to thrive without intervention.

January 2026 is well underway at Te Whangai.
The month started off looking pretty dry, so we’re grateful for the rain that’s come through 🌧️
After the holiday break, the team has kicked back into it with a mix of tasks keeping us busy, such as sorting lambs, sending cows out grazing, drafting ewes, fencing and loading wool out…watch this space as we begin to sort through our stud ram and ewe lambs over the next few weeks that all remain un-drenched 🐑

Yards were finished in time, and the team have just finished weaning, abit of extra space made it a dream.

Thanks guys - great to see you again Cattle Flat Station🐏

We spent the morning with Hamish de Latour at Te Whangai Romneys NZ selecting our rams for next season. This is our third year buying from Hamish and we’re now seeing the first real impact of his genetics at home - the lambing from our two tooths was exceptional this year.

We select on the traits that matter most to our system -

Fertility
Worm resilience
Weaning weights
Build
Wool type

Hamish consistently breeds practical, high performing Romneys with the depth and type we need.
Another strong lineup this year and we’re excited to get these boys home 🐏

The pressures building - the teams talked about rebuilding the yards since September, when they’ve had a chance in between stock work they’ve been smashing it out….weaning to begin Monday….nearly there!

35 years of breeding sheep to tolerate parasites and still thrive is how Te Whangai is helping increasing numbers of farmers like the Toulmins succeed

When drench resistance struck their Hawke’s Bay farm, Michael and Karen Toulmin took a hard look at their entire system and changed course.

The couple added breeding ewes to introduce an undrenched class of stock, brought in worm-resistant genetics from Te Whangai stud, and rebalanced their operation to include more cattle, cropping, and careful drench management.

Last week we had the Rams in at Taitua and Chris Spark from WRS scanning came along to eye-muscle and IMF (intra muscular far) scan the boys.

Why we do this:

🐑It gives better insight into which rams will sire progeny with higher muscle yield, better carcass value and better meat traits.
🐑It complements our existing selection traits such as parasite resilience, dag score, fertility, wool and longevity.
🐑Meat traits are moderately to highly heritable so farmers wanting to improve meat yields can influence that with the genetics they use.
