It’s déjà vu here at Marshall Highland Fold
🧡

Morag Imogen of Fantail Rise NZ 8379 has once again delivered us another impressive calf, our first bull for the season.

Although we were expecting Morag and our sire Coll of Marshall NZ 8945 to produce a calf without any balls attached. They didn’t get the memo but that’s the joy of breeding highlands.

We still couldn’t be happier with this pair for producing another exceptional calf. So here is Cionaodh of Marshall (pronounced Kenneth).

The diversity of highland genetics runs deep in his blood 👑 Cionaodh is quite the wee unit and is now happily running as a steer.

Only 3 more to go !!

I’m pinching myself so much for what is only one of many firsts for Marshall Highland fold !! 💛

Every now and then I stop and think about what this means for our fold’s future, which is pretty exciting.

All highland births are like an adrenaline rush, as you never know what will hit the ground. Our highlands have already accomplished so much this year. The variety of genetics has never looked so promising for our small fold in the deep South. It’s our responsibility to uphold the breed standards, make more connections beyond NZ and constantly improve the fold’s adaptability to fit our long term goals.

I’ve kept this selection a secret for the past year, as there’s nothing better than surprising you all with our first new bloodline. With carefully selected genetics coming directly from the UK all the way to NZ, is something I never thought would happen at this early stage.

October 2nd was already full of celebration with Blye of Marshall not only turning 3, but had also given birth to her first calf earlier that same day. Together with new sire Coirneal Mor of Strathburn they have produced a mighty bright yellow heifer.
After heaps of thought of combining names, I’ve decided on:
‘Blyneal of Marshall’.

To brake it down, ‘Bly’ in Gaelic means bright, yellow and sunshine, while ‘Neal’ means passionate and champion. Symbolically translating as the Golden Champion.

This also links back to Coirneal’s pedigree, his sire is Ruaridh 1st of Ubhaidh has a strong presence across the world for being recently crowned ‘Highland Bull of the decade’ at the Royal Highland Show’ in Edinburgh. Such an incredible achievement and an honour to have this calibre of genetics now in our fold.

Blyneal is doing remarkably well alongside her first time parents. There was no mucking around with this wee lass, quickly on her feet, standing well and had no issue latching on, just the way we like it.

So that’s 3 yellow heifers; Morain, Moribel and now Blyneal all sired by our 3 seperate sire bulls. Counting down the days until our other 4 make an appearance. Happy days !! 🤩

UPDATE: Monarc has found his calling. His new family, friends and home are looking forward to meeting him very soon. Thank you all so much for your enquires and continue to keep an eye out for any future cattle available 🤍

Looking for a striking highland to put over your beefies or to have as an impressive paddock decoration ? Here is your chance.

We have too many bulls on the property and I can’t keep them all. Our young, Monarc of Marshall is now looking for new pastures. He’s a perfect representation of the highland breed, he’s traditional black, well structured, has a calm temperament and is showing promise to being a great sire and he’s only 11 months old.

Not to mention that he inherits an impressive variety of full blood genetics, extending beyond NZ. His 2nd great grandsire is Rioghail of Balmoral, one of the late Queen Elizabeth’s bulls 👑

Sire: Laird of Langside NZ 9019
Dam: Morag Imogen of Fantail Rise NZ 8379

For more information on Monarc, please don’t hesitate to pm me to secure your new venture.

What a beautiful way to start spring, as we welcome another anticipated birth by one of my favourite highland pairings.

Having already produced 3 yellow bulls and 2 white heifers together, Mackenzie of Thistle Lea NZ 8808 & Macauley of Sruthan NZ 8832 always knows how to surprise us each year, noticing a colour trend to specific genders happening over the past seasons.

Well they’ve done the exact opposite and have welcomed their very first stocky, well structured, yellow… HEIFER !! A absolute cracking calf. At first glance I thought it was another yellow bull just by its size, but thankfully I was mistaken. Photos don’t do it justice.

Taking scottish words, “Mor” which means "large” & “great” and “Bel” meaning “beautiful” & “Fair”. I’ve combined the two and come up with a very fitting name, ‘Moribel’.

Moribel of Marshall has certainly captured my eye and is rocking her new tags. I'm absolutely stoked with how this years calves have turned out. Roll on Oct for more 🐂

It’s finally spring and I believe it’s time to start advertising our new 2027 calendars. Would you believe me if I said these were printed back in May, as if I’m in a toxic relationship, but we make it work.

Due to overwhelming popularity, we’ve given our calendars a new makeover, which incorporates our two favourite breeds; the full blood Highland cattle and purebred Valais Blacknose sheep. We are super excited to inform everyone that these are all ready for purchase ! 🗓️📸
Our calendars are printed locally, designed and photographed by myself, fantastic quality, showcasing stunning images of our fold and flock members for you all to enjoy. They make the perfect gift for those who also love hairy and h***y animals like ourselves.

Calendars are A4 in size. We can fit up to 3 in a postage bag, if you’re wanting more than one 🐂.
Calendars are $25.00 each.
Urban postage tracked $10.40
Rural postage tracked $16.40
Invercargill deliveries FREE

This year, you will also receive a FREE stylus pen with every calendar purchased. Just a small ‘Thank You’ for your ongoing support.

If you missed out last year, I highly recommend getting in quick as our calendars sell out ultra fast.

This definitely hurts. This post is one that I would always dread on making. But I think it’s important to share knowledge and recognise the hardships of what farm life brings.

We sadly watched our beautiful, Raine of Thistle Lea NZ 8773 earn her wings in the early hours of this morning🪽

We didn’t sleep a wink at all in fear of having her slip through our fingers. Heartbroken after finding her and being inquisitive on what caused this tragedy to happen, I decided to undergo a quick autopsy. What we found was astonishing, Raine had a tough fatty (bone-like) tumour growing in her stomach right through to her re**um, which caused obstruction to her twisted bowel and built up lots of pressure over time. Not only that, she was also carrying her 6 month old foetus on the side and with more research on her symptoms, we found that there is no cure or further prevention.

Mother nature is such a b**h. But sometimes no matter how hard you try to help a beloved family pet, it’s best to provide as much medical attention to help comfort and spend time with them while you have them, so that’s exactly what we did.

For those that don’t know, Raine of Thistle Lea was one of our first born calves, who taught me a lot about patience and falling more in love with the breed, when starting my fold. She’s super special to me and become the most memorable highland, who always got herself involved with our fold visits, being a constant pat hound, a photogenic queen for the annual calendars (always showing a big smile) and representing our fold on the world virtual stage. She proudly brought in 3 Marshall calves, who all share her headstrong spirit and unconditional love for constant attention. So I’m happy to say her legacy still lives on.

Words can’t describe how grateful I am to have made many memories and spend heaps of time with you. Miss you so much already Rainy. Love you boss !! X
