I started Tapioca Delight with an initial investment of K40 – enough to buy ingredients for my first cake – a tapioca cake. That was 11 years ago. Can I say I made a profit on my sales? Maybe. I honestly can’t remember.
I didn’t realise at the time that I was investing in what would be a dream come true when I first picked up those ingredients at the then Malaoro Market.
How do you grow K40 into a successful business? There isn’t one answer. But the non-negotiables are faith, passion, financial behaviour, consistency and never giving up, even after making the worst mistakes.
It took my husband and me six years of trial and error and never seeing our savings grow to more than K2,000 that we discovered Dave Ramsey. It was January of 2018 when we watched his first YouTube video and we decided we would try a debt-free life.
It was life-changing. It was when we really started to see our savings grow, and it was all thanks to Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps and his daily YouTube podcasts. We dedicated 7 days a week and 6 months of our lives to diligently learning these principles. We tried budgeting and saving and living below our means, we did our “debt-free-scream” and even started an emergency fund just like he taught. Prior to that, the money from our business kept coming and going, but now it actually started GROWING! In the four years that followed we were able to pay cash for large equipment for our business which was so liberating! We even paid our 10% equity on our first home by saving cash for it.
We are a testimony that small things become big things. Your dream can start with as little as K40 and with diligence, sacrifice and discipline, can one day become a business that you are proud of that touches the lives of many people every day.
