In Santo Tomas, Pangasinan, a purple revolution is quietly taking shape. College friends turned agripreneurs, Camelle Morta Singh (30) and Mariel Lorens Geralde (28), are the force behind Lunti at Lila Co., the regionβs first and largest ube (purple yam) farm.
What began as a 3.5-hectare birthday-inspired venture in late 2024 has now expanded to 15.5 hectares, with an ambitious goal of producing 400 tons of ube annually.
Faced with a national shortage of ube and inspired by a trip to Bukidnon, Singh and Geralde embraced sustainable farming techniques like ridging and trellising to maximize yield.
Their farm cultivates varieties such as VU-2 and hinaligi, and plans are underway to produce value-added products like ube halaya and ice cream.
Beyond business, the duo is sowing seeds of empowerment. Through their grassroots education initiative Ubeskwela, they train farmers across Luzon in modern ube cultivation, challenging the notion of competition with a spirit of collaboration.
Their advocacy extends to fair labor practices, youth employment, and plans to support Mindanao farmers through logistics and market access.
With export partnerships already in motion and a vision for a food processing facility, Lunti at Lila Co. is more than a farmβit is a movement.
As Singh puts it, βWe want to be known not just as farmers but as producers of quality ube.β
