Empowering Brews: Barangay Villamonte Hosts Coffee 101 for Women’s Month
BACOLOD CITY — In a fragrant celebration of Women’s Month, thirty young women gathered at the Barangay Villamonte People’s Hall last March 29, 2026, to transition from coffee lovers to budding connoisseurs. The event, titled "Coffee 101," offered a deep dive into the art and business of specialty coffee.
The workshop was led by Glifan Kim Delicana, founder of Mr Kim Coffee. He guided the participants through the fundamentals of coffee sourcing, roasting profiles, and the delicate science of brewing the perfect cup.
The session wasn't just about caffeine; it focused on appreciation, sensory skills, and the potential for coffee to serve as a platform for entrepreneurship.
The initiative was organized by the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Villamonte, headed by SK Chairperson Alyza Marie Mahilum and Committee Chairperson on Economic Empowerment, Hon. Mia Sumagaysay.
Recognizing the importance of providing tangible skills to their constituents, Mahilum and Sumagaysay collaborated with the Bacolod Business Community, a non-government organization that helps local MSMEs in Bacolod City, to ensure the program aligned with the month’s theme of female empowerment and self-sufficiency.
"We wanted to offer something more than just a seminar," said Chairperson Mahilum. "By bringing in Mr. Kim Coffee, we are giving these young women a glimpse into a thriving industry and showing them that they can turn a passion for coffee into a sustainable livelihood."
The thirty participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations, learning how to brew coffee using V60, french press, aeropress, and moka pot. They also learned how to make their favorite iced coffee using cold brew. For many, the workshop served as an inspiring conclusion to Women’s Month, blending the warmth of a community gathering with the grit of economic ambition.
As the aroma of freshly ground beans filled the People’s Hall, the message was clear: in Barangay Villamonte, the future is brewing, and it is female.
