Water is a huge challenge here in Cebu. When it rains, we are overwhelmed with the abundance, that it causes disastrous floods. But when the rain arrives just a little late, our wells, springs and rivers dry out, and upland irrigation becomes impossible. In towns, water from the tap are reduced to frustrating, tiny droplets.
People are quick to complain about the water districts, but as individuals, we should all take part in recharging our aquifers and keeping our water unpolluted, so that it is safe to use, most especially, safe to drink.
In our farm, we aim to develop as naturally as possible, to safeguard the purity of our groundwater, avoiding chemical leaching and overuse of fertilisers. We will plant on contours to slow, spread and sink rainwater to the ground until it fills, hoping soon, we will have water in our springs year-round.
We are already worried we will not have enough by summer.
Without water, food prices skyrocket and life is just, generally, difficult. So how do you plan to save water in your area?
