A little story to share: Behind the bazaar, the struggle during bad weather.
Since August 3, we’ve been dealing with days of heavy rain and bad weather. Our area was even placed under a state of calamity, yet our daily bazaar rent of ₱1,500 still continues because there was no official declaration of “no operation” from the organizer.
Sometimes, as a merchant you’re left with no choice but to open even when you already know there may be little to no customers. Because behind every day we open are expenses: rent, staff salaries, supplies, and most importantly, the safety and well being of our team.
I completely understand the organizer’s side too. It’s a business, and they also have rent and expenses to pay. But as small merchants, we carry our own set of responsibilities and losses.
After almost two weeks of bad weather, we finally opened again. On my way to the bazaar, I was praying, “Lord, sana maraming customers today. Sana makabawi kaming lahat sa ilang linggong walang benta.” And God truly listened. 🙏🏻
In just a few hours, we were able to pay our rent, our staff, and even settle the remaining balance for our supplies. We were also so grateful to see our regular customers coming back and supporting us.
The next day, we were hoping it would continue so we could slowly recover from the two weeks we lost. We had a good start we were almost at 30% of our quota sales in just a couple of hours. But then, the rain came again. Little by little, the customers disappeared until the bazaar became quiet and the sales stopped.
It’s heartbreaking, especially knowing that our staff are also providers for their families. That’s why every customer who chooses to visit us despite the rain means so much to us. Every purchase, every familiar face, every “support ko kayo” is a reminder that we’re not alone in this.
I know we will recover. Maybe not all at once, but little by little.
