Elina Svitolina is the new Italian Open Champion! 🏆🇮🇹

The Ukrainian star defeated last year’s finalist and World No. 3 Coco Gauff of the USA in three gruelling sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, to capture her third Italian Open crown in Rome.

Svitolina’s road to the title was nothing short of spectacular. She stunned World No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals before knocking down World No. 4 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals on her way to the championship.

She first lifted the trophy in Rome back in 2017 and successfully defended it in 2018. Since then, she had not advanced past the quarterfinal stage — until this remarkable comeback run in 2026.

This year, Svitolina returned to Rome in dominant fashion, defeating some of the world’s best players to reclaim her throne on clay.

Alex Eala is set to compete in both the singles and doubles main draw of the 2026 Roland Garros, which begins this May 24 in Paris.

This marks Alex’s second main draw appearance at the French Open.

Last year, Alex made her Roland Garros singles debut where she pushed Emiliana Arango to three sets before falling 0-6, 6-2, 3-6 in the opening round.

In doubles, Alex teamed up with Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa and reached the second round. The pair opened their campaign with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Emily Appleton and Yvonne Cavallé Reimers before bowing out to Olga Danilović and Anastasia Potapova in straight sets, 1-6, 3-6.

Roland Garros, also known as the French Open, is the second Grand Slam tournament of the season and serves as the culmination of the clay-court swing.

Alex Eala is set to begin her qualifying campaign at the Strasbourg Open tomorrow after narrowly missing out on a direct entry into the main draw of the said WTA 500 tournament.

The official qualifying and main draw brackets are expected to be released later today.

Leading the main draw field is Canada’s Victoria Mboko, the top seed of the tournament; who is also Alex doubles partner at Roland Garros.

The duo is also likely to compete together in the doubles event in Strasbourg as part of their preparations for their Paris campaign.

Alex Eala has one more tournament left next week before wrapping up her clay court season campaign at this year’s second Grand Slam event — Roland Garros in Paris, France.

If Alex reaches at least the third round in Paris, her grass court season is expected to begin during the first week of June at the Lexus Birmingham Open. However, if she makes a deeper run at Roland Garros, she may start her grass season instead at the HSBC Championships in London.

From this point forward, Alex’s goal is to continue improving her WTA World Ranking to secure easier direct entries into future WTA 500 main draws.

At next week’s Strasbourg Open, a WTA 500 event, Alex may still need to go through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw.

As of now, she is listed as the No. 1 alternate in case of any withdrawals from main draw players.

WTA 500 tournaments usually offer around 24 direct entry spots for top-ranked players, while WTA 1000 events provide approximately 50 to 78 direct entry slots depending on the draw size.

God bless Alex!

Elina Svitolina pulled off another stunning upset after defeating Iga Swiatek in a thrilling semifinal battle, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, to book her third career finals appearance at the Italian Open in Rome.

Despite struggling with her first serve throughout the match, the two-time Rome champion stayed composed in the deciding set, where she broke Swiatek twice to close out the victory.

The match mirrored their encounter earlier this year at Indian Wells, where Svitolina also defeated Swiatek in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

With tonight’s victory, Svitolina has leveled her head-to-head record against Swiatek at 3-3.

Svitolina previously lifted the Italian Open trophy in 2017 and 2018, but had not gone beyond the quarterfinals in Rome since her last title run.

In 2024, she bowed out in the fourth round, while last year she suffered a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to Peyton Stearns, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

Now, Svitolina heads into her third Italian Open final where she will face World No. 3 Coco Gauff.
