While his parents continue to sell fish in the market just to make ends meet, Rene Clert βBobetβ Baterbonia has been chasing a different dreamβone dribble at a time.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Bobet quickly became a crowd favorite during the 2025 Palarong Pambansa after leading his team to a championship victory. His dominant performance earned him the Most Valuable Player award, turning the young athlete from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur into one of the tournamentβs brightest stars.
But behind the cheers and recognition is a story deeply rooted in sacrifice, humility, and love for family.
Back home, his parents, Rovelyn and Rene, continue to earn a living by selling fish in the local market. Before the medals and applause, life for their family revolved around hard work and survival.
Despite his growing success in basketball, Bobet has never forgotten where he came from.
At just 18 years old, he already carries a strong sense of responsibility for his family. From the earnings he receives in basketball tournaments, he gives 80 percent to his parents to help support their household and his six siblings.
For Bobet, every game is more than a competition; it is a chance to change their lives.
Interestingly, basketball was not his first sport. He initially played soccer, but as he grew taller, he realized basketball was where he truly belonged. At 15, he fully embraced the sport, and his talent quickly became impossible to ignore.
Now, another chapter awaits him.
This rising Davao Eagle is set to continue his college education with the Ateneo Blue Eagles at Ateneo de Manila University. This is a major step closer to the dreams he carries not only for himself but for his family.
Yet even as bigger opportunities come his way, Bobet remains grounded. He dreams of one day earning enough to start a business for his parents so they would no longer need to sell fish in the market and could finally live a more comfortable life.
For now, he continues to play with heart, determination, and gratitude.
Beyond the trophies and rising fame, Bobetβs greatest victory may not be found on the scoreboard but in his quiet promise to lift his family toward a better future.
