Mung beans (Vigna radiata) are small, green legumes widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Asia, Africa, and parts of the Americas. They are valued for their high protein content, vitamins, and minerals, making them an important food source. Mung bean farming is relatively simple and adaptable, making it suitable for smallholder farmers as well as large-scale operations.

The cultivation of mung beans begins with selecting good-quality seeds. Mung beans thrive in warm climates, requiring temperatures between 25–35°C (77–95°F) for optimal growth. They prefer well-drained, sandy loam or loamy soils with a pH level of 6.0–7.5. It is essential to prepare the soil before planting, incorporating organic matter and ensuring proper drainage to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Farmers typically plant mung beans during the rainy season or at the beginning of the dry season, depending on the region. The seeds are sown directly into the soil, either manually or with a seed drill, at a depth of 2–3 cm. Proper spacing between the plants, around 30–40 cm, ensures adequate air circulation and reduces the risk of disease.

Mung beans require moderate water but are drought-tolerant once established. Regular irrigation is essential during flowering and pod formation, but excessive water should be avoided. The crop matures in 60 to 90 days, and harvesting is done when the pods turn yellow and dry. After harvesting, the beans are separated from the pods, cleaned, and dried to prevent spoilage.

Mung bean farming provides both food for local consumption and an opportunity for economic growth. The beans can be consumed in various forms, including soups, salads, and sprouts. They are also used in traditional medicine for their antioxidant properties and other health benefits.
