In colonial times, Williamsburg’s main streets were mostly dirt, but city officials often added crushed stone, gravel, and broken rock to improve the surface. These rocky layers helped reduce mud, improve drainage, and make travel easier for carts and carriages. Oyster shells were also mixed in with rock to harden the surface. While still far from modern paving, this stone-based surfacing was one of the best methods available in the 1700s. Today, Colonial Williamsburg’s restored streets replicate that rough, rocky appearance rather than using modern asphalt.
