: While the coconut sector has significant strengths as it provides regular albeit low incomes and sustains ecologically stable landscapes, it faces countless challenges and momentous problems such low productivity and aging palms.

Furthermore, climate change is already distressing life on earth in many ways and the resulting extreme weather events are likely to affect coconut production in several ways.

For generations, Filipino coconut farmers have relied on the traditional "tapahan" method to dry copra over open fires. But now, basic chemistry is threatening their livelihoods.

When organic matter burns, the smoke leaves behind chemical contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Citing strict new safety limits on these chemicals, the European Union is preparing to reject our traditionally processed coconut oil.

The solution is upgrading to smoke-free drying technology. The harsh reality? Most local farmers simply cannot afford the expensive new equipment required to keep up with global regulations.

Are we leaving our smallholder farmers behind in the push for modernization?

For generations, Filipino coconut farmers have dried copra over fire, often using the same methods their parents and grandparents taught them.

Now Europe may reject coconut oil made from it.

Smoke can leave contaminants in the oil, and the European Union is preparing stricter safety limits.

For farmers who have spent their lives growing coconuts, changing how they dry them could mean buying equipment they cannot afford.

Who will help them pay for it?

Our favorite part of the day at Bukana is just before the sun rises.

While most of the world is still waking up, Bukana is already alive. This is when everyone is in action—the farmers doing some of their hardest work while the air is still cool and the day is just beginning.

There’s something special about watching the farm come to life this early. The quiet, the fresh morning air, the sound of people working, and the promise of another day on the land.

Before the sun rises, the real work has already begun. 🌱👩‍🌾🌴

Grateful for another morning at Bukana

EL NIÑO IS COMING.

And this isn’t a “panic and stock up on everything” kind of post.

It’s simply a reminder to prepare while we still can.

Because extreme heat doesn’t just mean hotter afternoons.

It can mean higher electricity bills.
More pressure on our water supply.
Drier farms and lower crop production.
And eventually, higher prices for some of the things we buy every day.

So maybe now is the time to make small adjustments.

Save water. Fix those leaks you’ve been ignoring.
Have your AC cleaned before it starts working overtime.
Keep enough drinking water at home.
Prepare a little extra room in your budget for utilities and groceries.

Nothing extreme. No hoarding. No panic.

Just being prepared.

Because if we already know tougher, hotter months may be ahead, why wait until we feel the impact before we start preparing?

Prepare early. Adjust early. Panic less.

You don’t inherit success.
You inherit a dream.

You inherit the land someone worked hard to care for, the trees someone patiently planted, and the dreams someone believed in long before you were ready to understand them.

For us, Bukana is more than a farm. It is a piece of my father’s heart—a legacy built through years of hard work, patience, sacrifice, and faith.

So we will keep nurturing this land, Pa. We will keep planting, caring, and believing—because this is the part of you we get to carry forward. And as long as we’re here, your dream will keep growing. 🌱❤️

Ahhh, ulan sa Bukana! 🌧️🌴 What a beautiful sight for the farm. After all the heat and the watering, rain feels like a blessing—especially for the young trees and crops.
