𝗔𝗱𝗹𝗮𝗶 is a powerhouse grain that goes beyond simply filling you up. It fuels you with more energy and nutrients compared to regular white rice.
Just a cup, or 160 grams, of adlai can provide 𝟱𝟴𝟵 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, which is thrice more energy than a cup of white rice, keeping you full and energized throughout the day. Along with the energy boost, adlai packs 𝟮𝟭 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 and 𝟭𝟰 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿, supporting muscles and digestion.
Adlai is also rich in minerals, as it contains 𝟰𝟰𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 (𝗺𝗴) 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘂𝘀 and 𝟭𝟬𝟭 𝗺𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘂𝗺, helping build strong bones and overall wellness. It also provides about 𝟭𝟭 𝗺𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻, nearly meeting the 12 mg daily Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) for adults, making it an excellent source of this essential mineral.
Beyond nutrition, this grain is known for its resilience in extreme conditions, thriving even during droughts and typhoons.
While adlai remains relatively underappreciated compared to its more popular cousin crops, it has long been valued by indigenous communities. Across Asia, adlai is also used to make flour, coffee, tea, wine, beer, and vinegar, showcasing its versatility in culinary and beverage applications.
However, adlai comes at a higher price point—costing around P200 to P400 per kilo, and is mainly available in supermarkets and online shops rather than traditional wet markets in the country.
For now, despite its impressive nutritional and health benefits, this makes it less practical as a daily alternative to rice.
Rice is also deeply ingrained in our food culture, so it may take time and advocacy before more people warm up to grains like adlai.
So while we are not recommending adlai as a full substitute for rice at present, it is definitely one to watch out for. With its nutritional benefits and potential, adlai is a grain worth exploring should conditions of affordability, availability, and acceptance be met in the future.
