If the crayfish is young or the red patch has not yet appeared, turn it gently onto its back to inspect the underside:

Males have reproductive openings (gonopores) located at the base of the fifth (last) pair of walking legs. (Females have their openings on the third pair of walking legs).

Mature males feature small male reproductive appendages or bumps (gonopods/claspers) near the base of these rear walking legs.

Breeding and egg production only occur when water temperatures stay warm, ideally above 23°C (73°F–85°F).

✅Survival Rates:
Up to 30% of eggs can be lost during the incubation phase, and further natural loss occurs after hatching as young craylings stay attached to the mother before becoming independent.

🦞🧐 To keep A.R.C. alive out of water, pack them in a cool, dark, and humid container using damp packing material like foam rubber or wet towels. Never submerge them in standing water during transport, as they will quickly suffocate. They can survive up to 48 hours or more if kept properly moist and cool. 🦞🧐

✅Use an insulated container or cooler box to regulate temperature.

✅Line the bottom with damp towels, wet newspaper, or damp wood shavings.

✅Place ice or cool gel packs away from direct contact with the crayfish to keep them chilled without freezing or causing frostbite.

✅Limit stacking or crowding to prevent the crayfish from crushing or injuring each other.

✅Ensure adequate ventilation so they receive enough air, and keep drain plugs open if ice is melting so they never sit in pooled water.

To mimic the natural tropical slow-moving streams and billabongs of the Australian red claw crayfish, incorporate sandy substrates, complex rock formations, driftwood, and secure hiding caves into the tank layout. 🧐🦞

🔵Natural Substrate and Flooring🔵

✔️Sand or fine gravel:
Add a 2-to-6-inch layer of soft aquarium sand or fine gravel. This lets the crayfish satisfy their natural urge to walk, dig, and shift the bottom material.

✔️Broad floor footprint:
Prioritize horizontal surface area over water depth, ensuring each adult has ample floor space to roam without constant territorial conflict.

🔵Hiding Places and Refuges🔵

✔️Caves and crevices:
Place smooth aquarium rocks, slate stacks, or pieces of bogwood and driftwood to build dark, secure crevices.

✔️Abundant shelters:
Provide more hiding spots than the number of crayfish in the tank. This is critical for reducing stress and protecting them during vulnerable molting periods.
