🟦The Molting Process🟦

✅Molting is the shedding of the hard outer shell (exoskeleton) so the crayfish can increase in size.

✅Juveniles:
Young red claws molt every 3 to 4 weeks, going through 6 to 10 molts in their first year.

✅Adults:
Molting slows down significantly to roughly 3 to 5 times a year as they mature.

🟦Signs Before Molting🟦

✅Reduced appetite and eventual stopping of feeding.

✅Increased hiding and sluggish movement.

✅A dull, cloudy, or worn-looking shell.

🟦During Molting🟦

✅The crayfish may lie on its side or back; this is entirely normal.

✅The actual shedding takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

✅High vulnerability: The new shell is completely soft, leaving the animal unable to defend itself against cannibalism or predation.

🟦Care After Molting🟦

✅Leave the old shell:
Do not remove the shed exoskeleton from the tank.
The crayfish will eat it to absorb essential calcium and harden its new armor.

✅Provide calcium and cover:
Ensure adequate mineral/calcium levels in the water and plenty of hiding spots so other tankmates do not harm the soft-shelled red claw. Avoid disturbing or feeding them immediately.
