Award-winning photographer Sebastião Salgado and his wife, architect Lélia Deluiz Wanick, showed the world the difference determined people can make.
They reforested a 1,500-acre devastated area that is home to more than 500 species of endangered plants and animals in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, making clear the Earth's ability to regenerate under the right conditions.
They planted 2 million trees over 20 years to restore a destroyed forest.
Even wildlife has returned. 172 species of birds returned, in addition to 33 species of mammals. The entire ecosystem has been rebuilt.
May this example inspire all of us today, on Earth Day, and always.
