Lemon soda was first invented in the early 19th century, inspired by the invention of carbonated water by Joseph Priestley in 1767.

One of the earliest commercial lemon sodas was created in the 1830s when pharmacists began adding lemon flavoring and sugar to carbonated water for both taste and medicinal appeal. Schweppes, originally founded in the late 1700s, helped popularize citrus-flavored sodas, including lemon, in the 19th century.
