بدأ باكتشاف مبدأين حاسمين: الأول هو إسقاط صورة الكاميرا المظلمة، والثاني هو اكتشاف أن بعض المواد قد تغيرت بشكل واضح بسبب التعرض للضوء[2]. لا توجد قطع أثرية أو أو أوصاف تشير إلى أي محاولة لالتقاط صور بمواد حساسة للضوء قبل القرن الثامن عشر.
المشهد من النافذة في لو غراس 1826 أو 1827، يعتقد أنها أقدم صورة للكاميرا الناجية. [1] تحسين إعادة توجيه أصلي (يسار) وملون (يمين).
