An Affair with the Cow

After completing my MBA in 2011, I persuaded my dream of owning a dairy farm where everything will be produced what a mother would want for her child; Pure fresh hygienic Dairy products. Though it took me mere 3 seconds to write these three words but it has been a fierce fight with the labor, society and my own inner self to achieve these qualities in our dairy products.

When i started off the business, labor was a huge issue as the labor class was not willing to work in a hygienic environment. Plus they feel uncomfortable working under the direct supervision of the SEITH as they cant do the addition subtraction in milk which is their main source of income. If you have never visited a ‘genuine DERA’ i would suggest this Sunday go visit some around your house and just request to see the milking process and the housing of the cows and you will get an idea of what i mean by hygiene. After many labor leaving overnight and spending days and nights working at the farm myself ; feeding, milking, washing the cows i found two brothers from Bhawalpur who agreed to work on my conditions and rest is history. I have provided them top of the line milking machines which ensure hygiene of the highest level and my presence and CCTV cameras ensures unadulterated milk Alhmadolillah.

Our society is very complicated and complex. I started off the business analyzing the needs of the consumer which complained of the bad quality of milk; adulteration, unhygienic utensils, use of hormones on animals etc. But i forgot to ask them the medium they use to measure the quality of milk; Malai kitni moti banti hai, doodh ka zaiqa kaisa hai? bacho ko boo aati hai, doodh neechay lag jaata hai aap kya powder milaatay hai? etc. We as a society have mutually agreed not to believe anyone, the trust factor has just disappeared because there are so many fraudias around us that its impossible to filter who is actually doing his work faithfully. Since these last 6 years i have made many loyal customers who are with me from the start and now we are just like family. But the interesting fact is, they also tend to get suspicious twice or thrice a year of the quality of milk, not understanding the fact that natural pure milk is subject to many variables. What one needs to understand is that cows are living things and they tend to change the quality of milk due to many variables; change of feeding pattern, their pregnancy status, weather change etc.

Profits are abnormal in this business if you don’t have a soul. Just a simple example, milk from Sargodha comes everyday in open Mazdas which can easily be bought for Rs43/kg. Take 200kg of this adulterated milk, take 100kg fresh milk from a normal farm @ Rs.75 and sell this mixture for Rs.110. the consumer is immune to this mixture and will stand in long ques to buy this PURE FRESH milk just because their family is immune to its taste and makes a moti malaye. One day profits excluding all costs; Rs.13,500/daily Rs.405,000/monthly! A perfect business plan to earn and ruin the health of hundreds of thousands!!
