Did you know you can experience a traditional Japanese izakaya in Lisbon? 🥢🍣🌸

📍Saikai Izakaya (Rua das Portas de Santo Antão 145)

Last week I went to Saikai, a japanese izakaya in the heart of the city. The concept is simple, a place you go to enjoy a lovely little drink paired with traditional Japanese small plates. And that’s what we did! It was a great experience, the food was delicious and I was fascinated by their interiors!! I cannot recommend it enough! 🩷

Beef croquettes are one of my favourite Portuguese savoury snacks! They consist of a slow cooked beef batter that’s shaped into little cylinders and then deep fried.

They are the perfect appetizer to have with an imperial, and always a crowd pleaser! The process of making them in the traditional way is a little bit laborious but I guarantee it is worth every minute of it! 😋

This traditional Portuguese stew combines beef, carrots, potatoes, green beans, and peas. It's called Jardineira which translates to Gardener's Stew. It is absolutely delicious, and although meat-heavy, it’s not too rich. Jardineira is a family staple in Portugal that you won’t find at your typical tourist trap restaurants! 😋

Queijadas are small sweet tarts that are very popular across Portugal. There are many varieties of this cherished pastry, but it typically consists of a thin pastry shell filled with a sweet cheese filling and baked until firm and golden. Queijadas are not too sweet and taste great with a coffee! 😋

Is this the Algarve's most famous Algarve sweet?

If you’ve been to a typical pastelaria in the Algarve you've probably noticed these shiny parcels shaped like a pyramid, sometimes more like a crumpled ball of foil.

They are called Dom Rodrigo and are to the Algarve what pastéis de nata are to Lisbon! Inside these little pyramids are little nests made with doce de ovos and fio de ovos soaked in delicious golden caramel! 🧡
