ALTER EGO DE PALMER 2007 — “THE OTHER SELF”

Why is Château Palmer’s second label called Alter Ego?

Because Alter Ego literally means “another self” in Latin.

When Château Palmer launched Alter Ego with the 1998 vintage, the idea was not simply to create a cheaper version of Palmer. It was conceived as another expression of the same terroir — a different interpretation of what Palmer can be. The estate itself describes Palmer and Alter Ego as two distinct expressions of the same terroir, like two interpretations of the same musical score.

Unlike a traditional Bordeaux second wine, Alter Ego is made from dedicated vineyard plots and with a different blend and winemaking approach, designed to be more spontaneous, generous, silky and approachable earlier in its life. Château Palmer therefore considers it a distinctive wine in its own right rather than simply a “second wine.”

“Why no Portuguese wines in the selection yet?”

Portugal already has an incredible wine culture, with excellent producers, importers and specialist wine shops offering some of the country’s finest wines.

At Fine Wines Algarve, our focus has always been slightly different. We specialise in carefully selected international wines, particularly from Italy and France — something that is very closely connected to my own background and experience.

Our goal is to create a direct link between exceptional winemakers and the final consumer in Portugal, bringing wines that are not always easily accessible to the market.

Of course, I can’t share the details just yet… 🤫
But I am currently working on a very carefully selected Portuguese collection — and when the time is right, I think it will be something quite special.

The flagship Amarone of Tenuta Sant’Antonio, made from grapes grown in the estate’s oldest 4-hectare vineyard, with vines around 50 years old. The 2016 vintage is particularly impressive, combining power, concentration and remarkable balance.
