Putting A Story Behind Each Bite
Being of Hokkien-Peranakan descent, I had the privilege of being able to taste the best cuisines from two very distinct cultures. It definitely helps that Mum and Grandma were great cooks. Ngoh Hiangs , Hae Bee Hiams and loads of sambal belachans are staples on my family dinner tables for many years. I am not boosting when I vouch that relatives come by during festivities just to have a chance to sink their teeth into these traditional bites. In recent years, our Ngoh Hiangs and Hae Bee Hiams were shared within the extended families through word of mouth and tabaos to one another during our visitations.
With grandma’s passing and mum getting older, there grew a sense in me an urge to share the good food that I have taken so much for granted. Circuit Breaker proved to be the jump-start to me starting Cooking Ah Ma as what I had taken for granted, sharing of homemade staples with closed ones, suddenly came to a halt. So as I leveraged on deliveries to continue the legacy of good food sharing with family, I decided to also extend and open up to orders.
It is my hope therefore that the opportunity of allowing food of heritage to continue to bind and connect people stays strong. And when that can come through the Ngoh Hiangs, Hae Bee Hiam and Sambals that are offered at Cooking Ah Ma, it makes the sweat and toil of staying at the stove for hours well worth it. Enjoy every bite!
