Traditionally, our natural environments defined our cuisine and consequently, the use of these plants in ritual, medicine, and food built our culture. Our natural environments were sources of nutrition and nourishment that we could afford, access, and utilize with knowledge and skill. We have seen all of that change with the increased convenience of supermarkets, sprawling food chains, and globalized palates.
Food is a key component of identity-building. And as Singaporeans with multicultural immigrant roots, being fascinated with food has almost become a daily obsession. In this day and age, what does it mean to 'eat local'?

Everyone has a stake in food matters within Singapore.

Jointly organized by undergraduate students from the Yale-NUS Farming Collective, Roosevelt Network @ Yale-NUS and culinary anthropologist Nithiya Laila, this series of panel discussions seek to bring together farmers, policymakers, and culinary heritage enthusiasts, to spark conversations on what Singapore’s food future should look like.

Specifically, we hope that anyone interested in food matters in Singapore will leave these discussions with a better understanding of how Singapore’s food supply chain is jointly shaped by local food production, our rich culinary history, and current-day consumption patterns, as well as government policy.

These conversations are timely, especially since the government has recently begun collating ideas and suggestions for the Lim Chu Kang masterplan from all Singaporeans (https://www.ourfoodfuture.gov.sg/), a year after instilling the “30 by 30” target to contribute towards Singapore’s food security.

This presents an opportunity for everyone within the food ecosystem (that’s all of us!) to come together and brainstorm for solutions to achieve greater food sovereignty. These insights and ideas will later be compiled into a report that will be available publicly.

These panel discussions will be held over the course of a week, from 8-9.30pm on 20th July, 22nd July, and 24th July over Zoom.
