Semi-blind tasting with 5 MWs at 67PM - 3 x MWs graduated in 2015 'vs' 2 x MWs in 2025 including the freshly minted Singaporean MW - Jackie Ang. It is rare to have 5 MWs doing blind tasting in one sitting in Singapore. Jennifer Docherty MW flew in from HK.

The 'contestants' were:
1. Ying Hsien Tan MW
2. Ben Haskow MS MW
3. Richard Hemming MW
4. Jackie Ang MW
5. Jennifer Docherty MW

3 questions x 8 wines. Before we started, it seemed easy since we just had to choose the correct answers and it was semi-blind. As we progressed, we realised it ain't that easy as shown by the results. Richard Hemming MW came in at the top at 13 points out of 24.

If I am not wrong, out of the top 5 guests scores, 4 were ladies! Top scorer was a lady with 13 points too! Impressive.

The 2003 d'Angerville Volnay Champan was easy to spot and most got the very good quality 2015 Isole e Olena Ceparello. The 2021 Gabrielskloof Syrah on Shale deserves special mention! Super impressive and elegant. Medium ruby rather than deep ruby. I called it a Chilean Camernere because of its herbaceousness.

Glad you enjoyed it too ! Niew Vineyards Chardonnay 2023 was double decanted and breathed for 4 hours before the dinner. Thanks Joel!

For those who are new, Niew is made by ex-SG resident Niew Tai-Ran, a banker turned farmer and winemaker! Vintage 2023 was Tai-Ran's 5th vintage. Only 3,168 bottles made!

To date, Niew is served at over 25 Michelin-starred restaurants around the world from Denmark, UK to Singapore, HK and Taiwan. This includes 7 Three stars restaurants! In the U.S, Niew is listed at Quince (3 stars) amongst others. Latest news from Tai-Ran: Niew is now available at Atomix (World's Best no. 6) in New York! What a great feat by a new producer!

Raised in Singapore, Tai-Ran attended Chinese High and Hwa Chong before heading to Cambridge and subsequently a known investment bank. He definitely carried some of the qualities and experience he gained into his farming and winemaking foray. Coming from a very Chinese academic family background, his family also thought him the importance of 'Jing' - observing mindfully and attentively. We think this has served him really well!

First time tasting this in SG. Last tasted at the Weingut in April 2024. Upon opening, the wine was ripe and fruity and of course with the flintiness and acid backbone that Huber fans and many Burg lovers like. Fruitier, riper and rounder than what we remembered. Almost like very good 1er Cru or Grand Cru ripeness if blind tasted. Many would love it but we prefer a leaner and less ripe style. Thankfully after an hour or so, the wine transformed - more precise and fruits take the backseat and much longer minerality on the finish. I am happier because this is how we like our Chardonnay. As always, let the wine do its magic and don't judge the wine too quickly. Easier said than done because of expectations and past experience. Ha!

My guest's first Huber Chardonnay. He was very impressed. Another Burg lover sold on Huber Chardonnay!

This was excellent when we tasted at the Weingut last year. The stock just landed in Singapore. We opened a bottle today. Perhaps, we were in a happy mood but this bottle is dangerously yummy/delicious! Like a fresh, ripe cherry juice with silky texture in the background. For us, this is one of the key indicators of a great Pinot. Backed by good acidity and silky tannic structure, it will drink well over the next 10 years too! Now you can have your cake and eat it!! Yes, it is that good! Money back guarantee because we will be happy to drink yours.....

You know that it was a good wine dinner when everyone was happy...you could tell from their faces. Thank you to Johannes and Barbara Selbach for showcasing their 2000 Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett which we gathered from the guests that it was the best white of the night. And the 1994 Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese..we easily demonstrated that German Riesling could easily pair with any Chinese food as well as the fact that German Riesling has the best ageing potential among quality still white wines! Yes, when you drink aged Riesling, it will make you happy. 😄 Their super limited Spätburgunder Reserve 2018 was superb with the crispy duck!

Had it over BBQ today....the beauty of 2022 vintage is that you can enjoy them now yet they will have good ageing potent...
