Part 2 — Beyond Sassicaia 🍷

Sassicaia may be the icon, but there’s much more to the story of Tenuta San Guido.

In Part 2, Tiziano Bastianoni shares how Guidalberto and Le Difese became part of the estate’s portfolio, alongside a deep commitment to protecting the land, wildlife and heritage of Bolgheri.

From a 600-hectare wildlife reserve established in 1959 to the family’s long-standing passion for horses, Tenuta San Guido has always been about more than wine.

Today, all three wines remain rooted in Cabernet Sauvignon, with each expressing a different side of the estate.

What makes Sassicaia so special?

In Part 1, Tiziano Bastianoni of Tenuta San Guido takes us back to where it all began. Born from Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta’s passion for Bordeaux wines, Sassicaia was a pioneering project in Bolgheri.

In 1944, Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in Tuscany at a time when Bordeaux varieties were far from common in the region. For over 20 years, Sassicaia was produced privately for family and friends before making its first appearance on the market in 1968.

Today, Sassicaia stands as one of Italy’s most iconic wines, with a story deeply rooted in the pioneering spirit of Bolgheri.

The 2002 vintage brings mature complexity, with dried red fruit, cherry, forest floor, mushroom, cedar and gentle spice, balanced by a silky texture and savoury finish.

Paul Gros Vosne-Romanée “Aux Communes” 2022

The son of celebrated Burgundy winemaker Anne Gros, Paul Gros launched his own domaine with the 2022 vintage, bringing his own darker, more structured style to the family tradition. Expect rich plum and dark berry fruit, warm spice and clove, with a rounded palate, depth and velvety texture.
