Takinami Shokudo

Located in Otaru’s Sankaku Market, Takinami Shokudo was where Staff san was brought to have lunch by their local friend when visiting the area!

🦪 As with all the seafood-serving eateries in the market, Takinami Shokudo boasts extremely fresh, high-quality seafood! Their shellfish and shrimp are particularly fresh as they are prepared-to-order!

🍱 What makes this place unique is its signature dish: The Wagamama Don. You get to customise your own bowl with 3-4 seafood toppings out of a list! (Though there’s an upcharge for more premium items)

Staff san went for Ikura (Salmon Roe), Zuwaigani (Snow Crab) and Ama Ebi (Sweet Prawn) but you can get other options like Salmon, Uni, Scallops etc.!

🦀 Their complimentary miso soup is also made with snow crab stock, making it way better than your average miso soup! You can also add on a snow crab claw for a little extra charge!

The queue tends to get pretty long even though it does move pretty fast so do make your way down early to avoid long wait times! English menus are also plastered around the waiting area so decide on your order before it’s your turn to be seated.

[ - Hokkaido I]

🦪 Soy Sauce Butter & Scallop-flavoured Pringles (プリングルズ ほたてバターしょうゆ味)
A rare umami-packed flavour from the popular potato chip brand that is almost never found outside of Hokkaido! If you don't want to bring back raw seafood products then this is a good alternative!

🍛 Retort Soup Curry (レトルトスープカレー)
One of Hokkaido’s most famous delicacies is often sold in portable, easy-to-prepare retort pouches. Staff san has enjoyed Garaku’s soup curry before so they recommend going with theirs!

🫐 Haskap Berry Products (ハシカプ商品)
This rare berry exclusive to Hokkaido (within Japan) is packed with Antioxidants & Vitamin C! You’ll most often find it in jams, wine and candy during the summer months!

🍷 Furano Fruit Liqueurs (富良野フルーツリキュール)
Furano is known for the extensive range of premium fruits (Notably muskmelons) grown there so it’s only right that the liqueurs they create using these fruits are some of the best in the world! There’s also a ton of variety, with almost every fruit having a liqueur made using it!

🧀 SNOW CHEESE (スノーチーズ)
Sold exclusively in Daimaru Sapporo and New Chitose Airport, this sweet-savoury cheese-centric confectionary is one of the best ways to share Hokkaido’s famous dairy products with friends and family as it keeps at room temperature for up to 90 days!

🍜 Abura Soba (油そば)
The lesser-known cousin to Mazesoba, Abura Soba is an even more indulgent noodle dish whose highlight is the aromatic oil drizzled over the dish!

The perfect food to end off a night of drinking, Abura Soba’s strong flavour is sure to make an impact on your tastebuds! You can even add more chilli oil to amp the flavour up!

If you’re looking for an Abura Soba shop that opens till late then we recommend Abura Soba Tokyo Aburagumi! It might be a chain store but it consistently attracts long queues and is found all over Tokyo!

🥘 Monjayaki (もんじゃ焼き)
It may not be visually appealing but Monjayaki is one of those dishes that offers a unique dining experience in terms of its taste, texture and cooking style!

Just like okonomiyaki, Monjayaki is cooked on a grilltop and you’re even supposed to eat it directly from said grilltop. This is what gives it its signature char and smoky flavour!

If the appearance and liquid-ish texture aren’t your cup of tea then you can opt to cook it on the grill top for longer to make it crunchier!

🍲 Chanko Nabe (ちゃんこ鍋)
Ever imagine yourself taking part in sumo wrestling? Well, you can get one step closer to that by eating like a sumo wrestler with this classic hotpot dish invented by the sport!

Because it’s designed to be consumed by athletes, Chanko Nabe is packed with vitamins and nutrients by way of the seasonal vegetables, meat and fish used to make it!

If you really want the authentic version of this dish, there are quite a few restaurants operated by retired sumo wrestlers so seek them out if you really want to eat like they do!

[ : Travelling in Tokyo]

🗼 Tokyo Solamachi (東京ソラマチ)
Located right next to Tokyo Skytree, there’s actually plenty to do in this mall after ascending to the top of the Skytree so you can make the most of your time in the area!

There’s quite a few animal-related attractions in the area, with the Sumida Aquarium and a petting zoo within the mall that has exotic animals like toucans and pangolins!

Merch shops for various franchises abound here, with the most prominent being the Studio Ghibli merch shop, the Skytree Pokemon Center and the famous Kirby Cafe!

If you’re into astronomy, the mall’s top floor is home to a planetarium that also holds shows themed around the cosmos!

🐈 Yanaka Ginza (谷中銀座)
Famous for its Yuyake Dandan Steps, this quieter part of Tokyo isn’t just known for its architecture and tranquility but also for the stray cat population that is adored by its residents!

The shopping street in Yanaka Ginza is the main attraction for its retro 1980s charm, with many cat-themed souvenir shops, cafes and even a beer hall!

Looking for a place to stop and relax for a bit? Check out the nearby Kissa Nikai, which serves up a refreshing and visually-appealing cream soda float as well as a specialty corned beef rice bowl!

✨ Nakano Broadway (中野ブロードウェイ)
With Akihabara becoming far too mainstream and touristy nowadays, Nakano Broadway is now gaining traction as THE anime otaku mecca

With a more retro-style atmosphere as compared to the modern vibes of Akiba, Nakano Broadway has three whole floors dedicated to an assortment of collectibles, manga, retro games and idol merchandise!

For fans of the series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure over the age of 21, the renowned JOJO-style Bar Dio is located ten minutes away from Nakano Broadway and is a must-visit!

[Staff Picks]

Even though we just covered Saitama’s vibrant food culture, Staff san would like to add on just 2 more food/drink recommendations from their time spent living there!

🍺 Coedo Beer
Yes, it’s technically available in Singapore (At double the price though…💸) but it just hits different when you get it at the point of origin.

A little bit of trivia about the company name is that it’s an alternative spelling of Koedo, the nickname given to the historical downtown area in Saitama’s Kawagoe City, reflecting the brewery’s origins!

As a 地ビール (Jibiiru/Local Beer), Coedo’s craft beers are made using locally-sourced water from Kawagoe in Saitama, giving them a cleaner taste

Their Beniaka Indian Pale Ale (Made using Saitama’s local Kintoki sweet potatoes) is one of their must-tries when you visit the area. This is what Staff san had when they visited Kawagoeshi and it goes really well with the local Kintoki-based desserts!

🍜 Houjun Niboshi Menya Itsuki
While it’s a long ways away from Kanagawa, Shiki City in Saitama has a surprising number of Iekei Ramen shops and this is Staff san’s top pick!

For under ¥1000 a bowl, you get one of the cleanest-tasting tonkotsu broths you’ll ever have accompanied by thick yellow noodles, diced onions, bamboo shoots, boiled spinach and a slice of perfectly medium-rare pork chashu

The secret to the broth’s clean taste? The broth is made with niboshi (Dried baby sardines) that help to boost the broth’s umami while reining in the funk of the pork bones and adding in a subtle seafood element!

Don’t forget to add the complimentary tobanjang (Spicy fermented bean paste), chilli oil and minced garlic paste to elevate the dish’s flavour!

While there isn’t really much for tourists to do in Shiki, if you’re heading to Saitama on the Tobu-Tojo line and are craving a bowl of ramen, make a quick pitstop at Shiki station to try the best bowl of ramen Staff san has ever had!

Alchemist Pte. Ltd @ THAIFEX 2026

For the second year in a row, we are proud to support Umaji Village as they continue to expand their business in Thailand at THAIFEX!

As the biggest F&B-centric event in Asia, it has been our pleasure to facilitate business-matching between Umaji Village’s representatives and Thailand’s F&B retailers and F&B establishments!

🍊 Attendees were treated to the best of Umaji Village’s Yuzu-based products. From Yuzu Ponzu Vinegar to Yuzu Marmalade and even Yuzu Liqueur, we showcased the full suite of Yuzu flavours Umaji Village has to offer!

Thailand is a vast country so even though Umaji Village has established its presence there, we were still able to introduce many new people to Umaji Village and its Yuzu products at THAIFEX 2026!

🍊 New to this year, Umaji Village’s Yuzu Ponzu Vinegar is now being sold at Lopia Bangkok and its Yuzu Liqueur is now offered at Takashimaya Bangkok in addition to Prumplum Umeshu Bar from last year!

🍊 If you’re targeting the Southeast Asian F&B market but aren’t sure how to start or need further support, reach out to us at Alchemist Pte. Ltd!

Just like with Umaji Village in Thailand, we will be sure to make sure your foray into this market is a smooth and fruitful one!

That’s all for now and hopefully we’ll see you again at next year’s THAIFEX!

[ : Dining in Saitama]
🍢 Kashirayaki (かしら焼)
This dish that’s endemic to the Higashimatsuyama in Saitama is reminiscent of the Yakitori we’re all familiar with but substitutes the chicken meat with pork jowl!

What helps to elevate Kashirayaki beyond just being Yakitori but with pork is the accompanying spicy miso sauce that gives the dish a real kick of spice and umami!

If you’re feeling adventurous, Kashirayaki made using more unconventional parts of the pig like the liver and intestines are also available!

🍧 Kakigoori (かき氷)
The Japanese counterpart to our local ice kachang dessert, Saitama’s Chichibu district is famous for their Kakigoori (Shaved Ice) and is a good place to visit in the summer!

Chichibu’s kakigoori uses natural ice sourced from the mountains during the winter that has been kept frozen. This ice is what gives Chichibu’s Kakigoori its signature ultra-soft texture!

While most syrups used to dress Kakigoori tend to taste pretty artificial, many shops in Saitama actually use fruit syrups made from seasonal fruits like peaches to elevate the taste of this simple dessert!

🍵 Sayama Tea (狭山茶)
As one of the top three varieties of luxury tea in Japan, Saitama’s Sayama Tea is a must-have for Japanese sencha (green tea) connoisseurs!

The defining characteristic of Sayama Tea is its rich tea flavour (moreso than almost every other sencha out there). This is due to the colder climate of Saitama’s tea-producing regions!

If you’re hoping to get the most premium Sayama Tea, visit Saitama in early May as that’s when tea from the new season is harvested and arrives on store shelves!

[ : Travelling in Saitama]

🎐 Kawagoe (川越市)
Sometimes referred to as a “Little Edo”, Kawagoe is a great place to experience Edo period Japan if you can’t fit Kyoto into your trip!

With its many preserved Edo-period buildings containing cafes, local souvenir shops and even a sake warehouse, you’ll have plenty to do while strolling down the main street and drinking in the sights!

Venture out a bit further to the Hiikawa Jinja Shrine, which is well-known for its instagrammable windchime corridor and photo-taking spots!

🚆 The Railway Museum (鉄道博物館)
A must-visit for Train Otaku, this museum is the largest of its kind and focuses on the railway systems in Japan as a whole rather than the high-speed trains we talked about in a previous entry!

The museum has a huge variety of decommissioned trains for you to enter and examine, from steam locomotives all the way to modern shinkansen and even the regular trains you use to get around!

If just exploring the interiors of the trains isn’t enough for you, use the Railway Museum Raffle App to book a driving session for the mini replica trains in the museum’s outdoor area!

🌸 Tokorozawa Sakura Town (ところざわサクラタウン)
Built as part of the “Cool Japan” initiative, Tokorozawa Sakura Town is home to the best that modern Japanese culture has to offer!

The biggest draw of the place is the Kadokawa Culture Museum, which has large movie set replications, digital art theatres and even a manga library with over 37,000 books from the acclaimed publication!

Also in the area is the TeamLab exhibit “Resonating Life in the Acorn Forest”. Located in Musashino Woods Park, it has a powerful fairytale-esque charm despite its smaller size!

[Staff Pick]

Happy Vesak Day!

For some reason Fukuoka seems to be pretty popular with Singaporean tourists right now and our staff are no exception! One of them came back from there recently so let’s take a look at a hidden spot they found during their holiday!

🔍 This time, the spotlight is on Hakozaki, the former site of Kyushu University!

A quaint neighborhood near Hakata station, Hakozaki is the place to be if you want to see what it's like to live as a Fukuoka city native!

🛍️ The main “tourist attraction” in Hakozaki is Youme Town, a large shopping complex comparable to other Fukuoka titans like Lalaport that has surprisingly (according to our staff) reasonable prices. If you’ve got shopping to do then this place is a must-visit!

👕 Also located in Hakozaki is Fukuoka’s only Super 2nd Street store. For fans of secondhand goods, this shop offers far more than the regular 2nd Street shops, with their goods ranging from anime goods to kitchen appliances in addition to clothing!

🍜 If you’re feeling hungry, check out Menchanko Tei, a menchanko (Hotpot-noodle hybrid dish from Fukuoka) specialty store that’s a short walk from the Super 2nd Street!

🏘️ Hakozaki is also a fairly large neighbourhood so you can wander around the residential areas, drop by cosy mom-and-pop shops (like the neighbourhood fruit shop our staff stopped by) and just experience what it’s like to live in Fukuoka city outside of the downtown area!

If you’re travelling but want to wind down a bit from the bustle of downtown Fukuoka, hop on the Kagoshima line from Hakata station and come explore this hidden slice of the city!
