Because sugar was once scarce and expensive, honey became the treasured ingredient that made holiday treats truly special. It’s added to traditional Christmas cakes and pastries, enriching them with warmth and depth of flavor.
One of the most beloved customs involves oblatky—thin, communion-style wafers served before dinner. They’re drizzled with honey (and often garlic), a ritual meant to bring harmony and protection to the household in the coming year.
In some families, the symbolism goes even further. Before Christmas dinner begins, each person receives a tiny cross of honey drawn on their forehead—a gentle blessing for health, love, and the sweet moments yet to come.
