BOAT CAPSIZES AT NORGOWA SIERRA LEONE–GUINEA CROSSING
A tragic boat accident has reportedly occurred at the Norgowa Sierra Leone–Guinea crossing point in Kissi Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, after a boat carrying passengers returning from the regular Tuesday market in Guinea reportedly capsized.
Preliminary reports indicate that the boat was carrying more than 50 people when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening while passengers were reportedly crossing back toward the Sierra Leonean side.
Some passengers are said to have been rescued, while others are feared to have drowned. A search-and-rescue operation is reportedly ongoing as local residents gather at the crossing point.
The incident has sparked panic and grief among communities around the border, with families anxiously seeking information about relatives who travelled to Norgowa Town in the Republic of Guinea for the market.
Authorities and community members are expected to provide further information as the rescue and recovery operation continues.
The accident has once again raised concerns about safety measures for people using boats to cross the Sierra Leone–Guinea border, particularly on busy market days when passenger traffic increases
