A second rescue operation has been successfully carried out by the Life Support humanitarian vessel. An inflatable boat that departed from Tripoli was found at sea carrying 57 migrants, including 12 women and 9 minors. The people on board are from Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Sudan, Gambia, Guinea Conakry, and South Sudan.
Authorities have assigned the ship to dock at the port of Civitavecchia, nearly 1,000 km away. According to the emergency organization, this decision means that the 98 rescued people currently on board—many already exhausted from their dangerous journey and in fragile physical and psychological condition—will have to remain at sea for several more days before receiving essential assistance and services.

Government distances itself from Olony remarks

The government has rejected recent remarks attributed to Lt. Gen. Johnson Olony Thabo, saying they do not reflect official policy and should be treated as personal comments.

In a press statement dated Jan. 27, government spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny said the Revitalised Transitional Government remains committed to peace, dialogue and the full implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

Olony, a senior SSPDF commander, drew public backlash after reported comments during a briefing to government forces in which he allegedly urged troops to show no mercy and destroy property during operations against rebel elements. Civil society groups warned the language was dangerous and risked harming civilians.

The government clarified that the mandate of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) is to protect civilians, defend territorial integrity and restore public order—not to target innocent people.

The statement also assured residents of Akobo, Nyirol and Uror counties who fled to UNMISS sites that security conditions are being addressed and their safety is guaranteed. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and avoid misinformation as security operations continue in northern Jonglei.

GOVERNMENT TO AWARD 1,300 SCHOLARSHIPS NATIONWIDE

The government has announced plans to award 1,300 scholarships to vulnerable children across the country, targeting orphans and students from disadvantaged families in a bid to expand access to education.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs, Adut Salva Kiir, following a high-level meeting with the Minister of General Education and Instruction, Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok. The meeting focused on strengthening special and inclusive education nationwide.

The scholarship program, issued under a directive from President Salva Kiir Mayardit, will be implemented across all states and administrative areas, with 100 beneficiaries selected from each to ensure equitable regional representation.

Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to inclusive and equitable learning, particularly for children facing economic and social barriers to schooling

CDF Warns IO to Surrender or Face Full-Scale Military Operation

South Sudan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Paul Nang Majok, has warned IO forces operating in Greater Jonglei State to surrender or face a full-scale military operation.

Speaking to SSPDF troops in Duk County on Tuesday, Gen. Majok also urged civilians in Yuai, Pathai, Walgak, Lakien, and Akobo to avoid areas occupied by IO forces for their safety.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have called on IO leadership to release prisoners of war and allow humanitarian and medical access to detainees.
