COMMON PIG BREEDS IN AFRICA:

🟫The main Pig breeds most reared in African countries are the Large
White, Landrace, Hampshire, Duroc, camborough, saddled, and pietrain.

🟫 Each of these pig breed has its own unique characteristics that make it
suitable for a particular production system and market.

🟫 Pig performance depends on their genetic merit and the environment
they are raised in.

TIPS ON PIGGERY CONSTRUCTION:

First of all, you have choose a right place or site to put the piggery.

It has to be away from the houses atleast 50 metres and it should be built
where most of the time wind blows to, so that you can't be affected by
the scent from the piggery. The land should also have a slope for
drainage system.

A piggery meant for rearing pigs on a permanent basis

should be strong and durable:

â–ªThe floor of a piggery should be hard, unbreakable and rough.

â–ªSlanted floors to easily allow water/urine or wastes flow to the drainage

or gutters to keep the pains dry.â–ªCreep areas are constructed essentially to isolate breast feeding piglets.

â–ªYour design should enable an all-in all-out management system to be
operated with complete cleaning, disinfection and drying of pens

between groups. This prevents the build up of infection and reduces the
exposure to viruses, bacteria and parasites.

â–ªThe roof which can be conical or flat should be sufficiently high to
have enough air circulation.
The doors should be strong and durable. Any material may be used for
the door but the best material is iron.

â–ªA feeding passage of about 1metre is convenient for moving around.

â–ªThe drainages from each room and the main drainage should be
constructed with sufficient slope (slanty), more so smooth for easy
cleaning.
