On a day when Trinidad and Tobago celebrates its Independence, Shantelle Adams gave the nation exactly what she promised — an Independence Day gift in the form of a hard-fought boxing victory.

Shantelle Adams secured a UNANIMOUS DECISION victory, with all three judges scoring the fight 58-55, 58-55, 58-55 in her favour.

From the opening bell, Shantelle dominated the fight and showed her ability to work from all different angles. But this was no easy night.

Her opponent came to fight. The girl did not lie down.

She took some of Shantelle’s best shots and continued walking through her punches. The opponent proved to be much more durable and stronger than Shantelle expected, making her work for every round and every moment of the victory.

Then came the fifth round.

Shantelle sustained an injury and was forced to take a knee. But she got back up.

She continued.

She finished the sixth and final round — and she won that round.

After the fight, Shantelle acknowledged that the girl was a tough fighter and that she came to fight. She also explained that the high altitude created an additional challenge, as she was fighting approximately 2,000 feet higher up in the mountains than where she would normally fight, resulting in some breathing difficulties.

But despite the injury, the altitude and an opponent who simply refused to back down, Shantelle Adams found a way to get the job done.

She dominated the fight, fought through adversity and walked away with a unanimous decision victory.

And now, on Independence Day, Shantelle has one message for Trinidad and Tobago:

“Happy Independence Day, Trinidad and Tobago. This is your Independence gift from Shantelle Adams, Boxu Potts and Barrath Ramoutar.”
