๐ Sheep Sense: 5 Signs Your Ewe is Ready to Lamb
Brought to you by FairyFarm Ltd.
Lambing season is one of the most exciting and nerve wracking times on the farm! Whether youโre a seasoned shepherd or just starting out, knowing when your ewe is about to give birth can help you prepare, reduce stress, and keep both mama and baby safe.
Here are 5 clear signs your ewe is getting ready to lamb ๐
1๏ธโฃ Her Udder Fills Up โBagging Upโ
Her udder becomes firm, round, and noticeably larger sometimes a week before lambing.
Teats point outward.
The udder feels full and tight, especially within 24 hours of birth.
๐ก Sheโs getting ready to feed that hungry little lamb!
2๏ธโฃ Her V***a Softens and Swells
As lambing nears, the v***a gets swollen, pink, and moist sometimes with a clear or cloudy discharge.
๐ Thatโs your cue: the big moment is close!
3๏ธโฃ She Separates Herself from the Flock
Right before lambing, ewes often look for privacy.
She may:
Wander off alone
Stop eating
Lie quietly in a corner
Itโs her instinct to find a safe spot to give birth.
4๏ธโฃ Nesting Behavior Begins
Watch for pawing, circling, or lying down and standing up repeatedly.
Sheโs making her โnestโ for the new arrivals.
๐ Let her settle comfortably things are about to happen!
5๏ธโฃ Restlessness and Short Pushes Begin
In early labor, she becomes restless:
Bleating softly
Lying down and getting up
Straining lightly
If sheโs been pushing hard for over an hour with no lamb, itโs time to step in or call your vet.
๐ Final Tip:
Keep the lambing area clean, dry, and quiet.
Make sure the lamb nurses within 30 minutes that first milk colostrum is liquid gold! ๐ผโจ
