MOFA strongly condemns PRC political & economic coercion enacted to pressurize other countries into changing their sovereign decisions, revoking overflight clearances & parroting PRC talking points!
President Lai Ching-te's planned state visit to our African ally, Eswatini, on an invitation from King Mswati III, had to be postponed after Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar revoked overflight clearances without warning just before departure.
MOFA condemns the PRC's politicization and weaponization of flight information regions to interfere in the sovereign decisions of other countries, seriously impacting the routine functioning of global civil aviation networks. We also protest Seychelles and Madagascar parroting PRC talking points that challenge international norms and flight safety. We call on the international community to recognize the political and economic coercion that the PRC enacts against other countries, as well as its flagrant interference in their internal politics. This behavior is not solely directed at Taiwan, but also poses a threat to the democratic world order and international law.
MOFA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign democratic nation, and neither side of the Taiwan Strait is subordinate to the other. We have a right to engage with the world, and no country should stand in our way. Any statements that attempt to undermine Taiwan's sovereignty have no bearing on the global consensus and the objective reality of the Taiwan Strait status quo.
MOFA offers sincere thanks to the Kingdom of Eswatini and other allies and like-minded countries that have attempted to mediate on our behalf. Taiwan will continue to adopt a pragmatic and steady approach in expanding our diplomatic space and engaging with the world.
