To grow maize successfully, clear and plough the land, plant certified hybrid seeds at the onset of the rains (about 25 kg per hectare), apply NPK or DAP fertilizer at planting, control w**ds actively during the first 3 to 10 weeks, and harvest when moisture content drops.

Land Preparation and Planting
Site selection: Choose well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soils with good fertility.
Tillage: Plough and harrow the field early to break hard pans and clear perennial w**ds like couch grass.
Timing: Plant at the very beginning of the first or second rainy season (typically March or August/September depending on your region).
Spacing: Maintain standard spacing of 75 cm between rows and 25 to 30 cm between plants with one or two seeds per hole.

Crop Management and Care
W**d control: Keep the field clean during the first 3 to 10 weeks, as early w**d competition severely lowers final yields.
Fertilization: Apply basal fertilizers like NPK or DAP during planting, and top-dress with CAN or Urea when plants are about 30 to 45 cm tall.
Pest and disease monitoring: Scout regularly for stalk borers, fall armyworms, and maize streak virus, applying recommended pesticides if outbreaks occur.

Harvesting and Storage
Harvesting: Harvest when cobs dry down, husks turn brown, and grain moisture is around 20–25%.
Drying and storage: Dry the grains down to 12.5% moisture content before storing them in clean, hermetic bags or silos to prevent storage pests like weevils.

Management practices are the activities done to take care of banana plants. Good management helps improve yield, fruit quality, and reduces losses.

DE-SUCKERING
This is the removal of extra shoots.

Banana produces many suckers but only a few are needed.

Keep only three plants per mat:
One mother plant
One daughter plant
One young sucker

Remove all others.

Benefits:
Reduces competition
Improves fruit size
Ensures continuous production

Do it from 2 months after planting and repeat every 45 days.

PROPPING
This is supporting the plant to prevent falling.

Plants may fall because of heavy bunches or wind.

Use a strong pole with a V-shape at the top.
Place it under the bunch carefully.

Benefits:
Prevents falling
Protects fruits
Improves yield

LEAF MANAGEMENT
Remove dry and old leaves.

Dry leaves:
Block sunlight
Carry pests and diseases
Damage fruits

Keep about 7 healthy leaves per plant.

After harvesting, cut the stem and chop it into small pieces.

EARTHING UP
Add soil around the base of the plant.

Benefits:
Supports the plant
Protects roots
Keeps moisture

MALE BUD REMOVAL
Remove the male bud after fruit formation.

Benefits:
Improves fruit growth
Faster maturity
Reduces pests

Use clean tools to avoid spreading diseases.

BAGGING
Cover the banana bunch with a bag.

Purpose:
Protect from insects
Improve quality
Reduce damage

IRRIGATION
Banana needs a lot of water.

Water regularly:
Every 3 days in dry conditions
Up to 15 days in wet conditions

Water per plant:
5 to 10 litres early stage
10 to 15 litres during growth
15 to 20 litres during fruiting

Drip irrigation is best.

W**D MANAGEMENT
W**ds compete with banana plants.

They reduce yield.

Control by:
Mulching
Hand w**ding
Cover crops like cowpea

Keep field clean especially in early stages.

FERTILIZATION
Banana needs many nutrients.

Important nutrients:
Nitrogen for leaves
Phosphorus for roots
Potassium for fruits

Use manure, compost, and fertilizers.

Apply at different growth stages.

PEST AND DISEASE CONTROL
Keep plants healthy by:

Using clean planting materials
Removing infected plants
Cleaning tools after use

Early control is important.

POST HARVEST CARE
After harvesting:
Cut the stem at ground level
Chop it into small pieces

This helps reduce pests and improves soil.

Good management practices are important for banana farming.

They help:
Increase yield
Improve quality
Reduce losses

Farmers should manage water, nutrients, w**ds, and pests
